    Scented packages

Summary: clickbaitoz raised a concern about sellers spraying perfume or aftershave on packages, which poses a problem due to their scent sensitivity. They also dislike receiving magazines with unpleasant odors. shoppingbag* suggested politely asking sellers not to use scents, as it is not a worry for them personally. sandypebbles hadn't encountered this issue since the 80s and advised communicating preferences to sellers. springyzone suggested this might occur with second-hand items to mask musty smells and recommended contacting sellers. davewil1964 stated they neither sell scented items nor have received any scented packages.

It seems to be becoming a trend that some sellers are spraying after shave or perfume etc onto the goods they are sending in packages.

This is a problem for me because I have a sensitivity to scents & really who wants to smell a really strong scent of any kind on stuff they've bought??

I also buy magazines and I also don't want bad smells like mildew & mold in them either. But I recently bought some collectible items & have had to get rid of all the packaging because of it smells like Lynx Africa lol.

Has anyone else noticed this as a buyer, or as a seller do you do this and why?

First time using the new board, some of my reply was directed at different members sorry. Also is there still a 'mark as solution' required where they keep sending me notices until I do that?

    As a seller, I don't. As a buyer I haven't.

I don't buy that much on ebay and over the last few years, a lot of items have been new, so nope, I have not had it happen to me.

I would guess that it is happening to second hand or used items because sellers want it to present well when opened. They are deathly afraid of buyers thinking it smells bad or 'stored' or musty in any way. Then opening a return or refund claim.

If you buy a lot of pre owned things, you'll need to message the seller immediately after buying and explain.

A very few times I've had the opposite where it smelt of mildew with magazines & I got a DVD set where the whole packaging stunk of cigarette smoke which I don't know how that would happen since it didn't think plastic would absorb the smell.

So I guess I shouldn't be complaining about things smelling 'nice' then lol. I think you'lre probably right in that's why some sellers do it. But I also wondered if they found out that I'm female maybe they're trying to to impress me or something 😂 I don't think they'd bother if they knew I was in my 50s & have an aversion to Lynx Africa 😅

From now on if it's any sort of collectible or gift type item I will ask them not to spray. Thanks for everyone's response.

I haven't had such a thing sent to me since back in the 80's (not eBay obviously) but if I had sensitivities, I would make sure to communicate with a seller

    Why do they do it?

I suppose some sellers might think it's 'nice' and brighten someone's day

I have had many packages sent that had perfume sprayed on them. It does not worry me. As it does worry you, what about asking nicely that they don't do that before they send the parcel. As for other smells, I don't have any answer, sorry.
