Risks of Selling An Expensive Item

I have been selling trading cards for a while and have really only sold cards of value up to $100 with some upwards of $300. I now have a card which I am attempting to sell for $3500 and am just looking for advice on what some of the risks may be in selling and posting more expensive items and what other sellers do to mitigate these risks?

    Cheers.

Just don't risk more than you are willing to lose. Aust Post is always my concern so attach an extra address label.

    Yes… those French chefs don’t pay themselves… 🤭

Seriously, don’t even contemplate selling overseas for this item. There isn’t anything you could do to mitigate that risk.

    Cheers.

there is one huge risk you take with little chance of remedy.

Imagine a situation where an avid collector has the exact same card that you are selling, but in a much poorer condition.  A card so bad that it is just a space filler until they can get a much better card.

Can you see where I'm headed yet?

This avid collector buys your card.  They are very happy with their purchase, but times are tough.  It's a struggle putting food on the table for little Padi, Countess, Springy and Dom.

So, they send you a pic of their poor condition card and say "**bleep**, you sent me a dud card.  Refund me or I'll report you to eBay".  Before you have a chance to reply they put in an "Item Not As Described" claim with pics of the poor condition card.

eBay will give you a chance to respond to the claim, but will find in favour of the buyer and refund their money.

You are now without the sale money, without your card . . . and probably a nice red dot decoration on your seller feedback.

As far fetched as some may think this scenario is, it has been the subject of many a thread here.

How to mitigate the risks?  DO NOT sell to an overseas buyer, have local pickup with payment by cash.  Meet them in a public place like a Maccas.  If you are in Victoria, check whether your local Police Station has an exchange point.

It may take a while to sell, but better than having a switch buyer.

By the way, the buyer's little ones, Padi and Countess, are fussy eaters, but love looking at daddy's nice shiny card collection.

    Don't.

    1.  An item not as described - they can and will send a photo of anything.

    2. It's damaged - this could be a photo of yet again anything.

eBay no longer has the ability to serve a seller.

eBay is always on the side of the buyer - it's their 5 course dinner - not their chips.

Oh - and if you sell to the US - things are changing on the 29th - look it up.
