Cost of living (Nov 2022)
I know that the cost of living has risen over the years, but sharply in the latter half of 2022, so I thought we could post helpful tips for easing these costs.
I don’t want this thread to become a blame game about who caused what to increase the cost of living, just hints to help those who may be struggling.
Post your suggestions here, or post your experiences if trying the suggestions.

·2 years agoFor the Woolies app users, there should be a new Christmas bauble to click on today (Monday). If you open the app, the link will be under the stats, but above the booster items. I clicked mine when I got home from work tonight. If I spend more than $1 in store or online before December 24, 2,000 points! That's basically $25 of free money in a few days from the promos. Of course, I did get some really stupid ones that I'd never use and I felt a bit let down, but these last couple have made up for it. I'm guessing this will be the last one, so definitely click on it and see how you go.
As for the weekly boosters, I boost everything. Even ones I'd never use, like signing up for Origin energy. You just never know when there will be one that you wouldn't normally use, you find you use.

·2 years agoHaving said that, my free trial is up tomorrow and they will be hitting my credit card for the year's subscription.
I've decided to keep it as I've almost got the cost back, so I'll be in front over the year.
I'm thinking I may have to uninstall and re-install to give it a kick in the bum to get freebies.
It'll mean another 3 weeks of getting verification codes via email - dammit.

·2 years agoFree trials and subscriptions? What is that about? I've never subscribed to anything with the woolies app. Maybe that is why you're not getting the promos that I get. They get enough money from me, I'm not paying for a subscription. Is that like ebay Plus, where everyone basically gets ripped off?

·2 years agoScored 2,800 Woolies bonus points today for a $35 purchase thanks to the Woolies Rewards app. I got to click on the Christmas bauble promo last weekend and got 1000 bonus points if I spend more than $1 in store or online. Expires today, the 17th.
During the week, I had another booster pop up offering a Christmas bonus of 1,800 points if you spend more than 1c (yes, you read that right, 1 cent), in store or online. Expires today. I clicked the T'&C's for both and the second one said you have a current promo, only one will count. I didn't boost the second promo.
So, I went and bought the few items I needed and used the first promo. 1,000 points, plus extra for what I'd spent. I then went and put those items in the car and boosted the second promo. Went back in and bought some milk that I'd deliberately not bought the first time. Bingo, 1,800 points!
Over $10 just like that. I know for a lot of people, $10 isn't much, but it can mean a tray of snags and some veges for a family doing it tough. It was well worth the short walk out to the car.
Stawks, you mentioned you're having issues with the app. Last year (or the year before, I can't remember, but it doesn't matter), we were at Woolies and got booted out of the app as I was about to scan it. Couldn't log back in. Thankfully I had the physical card, but I lost all the booster points that I would have got. Like you, I'd be given an hour to reset the account, but the email would take several hours to arrive. Eventually, after repeatedly trying, the email eventually arrived before the hour was up and I was let back in. It took over a month. Keep persisting, or try getting a new card. I did that after my original card stopped adding points to my account. Over a year and I hadn't accrued $10! I got a new card and all was well (until we were kicked out that time!)

·2 years agos-n-d I have persisted with this stupid verification code and Slr told me not to sign out.
They threw me out anyway, but the next time I had to verify, I didn't sign out again.
Now I'm signed in all the time (happy) but I'm not getting anything that would rock my world. (not happy)
I still get the boosters via email anyway.
The dumb snow globe thingy has only given me a free pkt of pretzels that I have to pick up instore!
So I'm left wondering why I only get offered carp.

·2 years agok1ooo, thank you for the update.
Is anyone using an expiry date app? It helps to be aware that a particular food is getting close to its use-by date.
It might also be helpful to have a recipe app that shows recipes from ingredients you already have (especially ones that you need to use up).

OP3 years agoI posted early on that I thought that 180GB of mobile data for a year would be plenty for me.
Since I have been on WW Long Sim plan I have used 0.75GB. At this rate I will only use 12GB for the year.
On my plan I can “gift” up to half my data to another WW mobile plan holder. That is 90GB !
In the spirit of (board) neighbourliness, if there is anyone out there who has a WW mobile plan who would like some FREE data then Private Message me and we will work something out. I am prepared to part with 10GB to three members (30GB total) at this early stage in my plan. 10GB top up on WW Mobile sells for $25, so this is good free data for anyone on a WW plan who wants it.
I have decided that the $150 Long SIM 365 day plan with 100GB will be plenty for me when I renew my plan next December. Because I won’t be renewing at the same plan level I will not roll-over any data. This means I might have data to gift closer to December as well.

OP3 years agoan update on WW mobile plans
WW are increasing the prices of their mobile plans from 24th April. Some monthly plans are being restructured and consolidated. Still time to get the current pricing.
On a quick reading of the plan changes it looks like the increase in price is being offset with increased data allowance and some other tweaks (see spoiler).
Summary
The $150 Pre-paid Long Expiry 365 day SIM plan increases to $170 with:
- 100GB data increasing to 125GB
- maintains unlimited standard national calls & SMS
- introduces 6,000 MMS limit standard pictures and video (video previously not available)
- 500GB Data Bank when recharging
The $200 Pre-paid Long Expiry 365 day SIM plan increases to $220 with:
- 180GB data increasing to 200GB
- maintains unlimited standard national calls & SMS
- introduces 6,000 MMS limit standard pictures and video (video previously not available)
- 500GB Data Bank when recharging
These plans maintain the 10% off one grocery shop per month benefit.
There is also the opportunity to re-coup some of the increase through using the already available “Refer a friend” feature.
I had a family member recently change over from Telstra Pre-paid mobile to WW mobile. After he changed he activated the “Refer a friend” offer that sees both he and I receive a WW e-gift card once he has been on WW mobile for 3 months. WW mobile customers are able to redeem the “Refer a friend” reward up to 10 times per year. If you know someone who is changing to WW mobile then get them to activate the offer within the first month of signing up.

·3 years agoThose palm trees look incredible after you've trimmed them.
Yes, it can sometimes be worth it to hire equipment, and sometimes it's better to own it. (I'll admit I'm an "I must own it" personality, but I have fought the tendency when the thing is just for a one-off or hardly-ever-going-to-use-it task.)
I love the tip about last-thing pickup and first-thing return.

OP3 years agoVictoria has daylight saving, as everyone would be aware, and we are so far west in Mildura the sun sets later here than in Melbourne. I was able to clean the motorhome roof until after well after 8:30pm. The time stamp on one of the photos after cleaning is 8:50pm. This is why picking up at 4:30pm or even 4:50pm still gives about 3 good hours of use + the whole of the next day if working in daylight is required.
I did some paving once and hired a wacka-packa for a day with pickup at close of business. If I had picked up in the morning I would have needed to pay for 1-1/2 days hire as it was too much work for one day, but not enough for two days.

OP3 years agoElectricity savings for those with Solar Panels
Most members with Solar Panels will know this, but some might not have given it much thought.
Do clothes washing, dishwashing and other electricity dependent chores during daylight hours so that you use your own electricity rather than sending excess generation to the supplier/grid. Use timers on appliances so that they operate during peak electricity generation (between 10am and 3pm here in Mildura).
On weekends, for those who do not work on weekends, consider cooking the main meal of the day at lunchtime and just snack in the evening. Cooking a roast or using the air fryer during daylight hours will save a little, but that becomes more substantial if done regularly,
We only get 6 or 7 cents per kilowatt hour for exported electricity, but get charged around 30 cents per kilowatt hour at night so the savings can be substantial, especially in places that get lots of sunlight hours.

OP3 years ago**this one won’t be for everyone, but it may help some members**
EQUIPMENT HIRE
If you are ever wanting to hire some equipment from a hire firm, ask what the weekday rate for hire is and then ask if you can pick it up just before close of business the day before you need it. During Daylight Saving months, for those with DS, this will give better value for your hire as you could get almost a 1-1/2 days use of the hired equipment if you pickup at 5pm.
Alternately, if you need the hired gear for a big job, then ask what the rate is for both days of the weekend. Also ask if you can pickup just before close of business on Friday and drop it off at opening time on Monday morning. Definitely worth asking.
Here is an example using my last weekend’s efforts.
I have a lot of palms here at my place, LOTS. Not talking about potted palms, these are tall! I last trimmed them 2 years ago. Back then I hired a trailer boom lift on a Wednesday and dropped it back on Thursday morning. I had to trim back 10 years of dead fronds and it was hard work getting it all done in one day . . . so I decided then that I would trim them every 2 years.
I enquired about hiring a trailer boom lift from the same business I used 2 years ago. The weekday rate is $260 a day, but the weekend rate is $200/day if you hire for both Sat & Sun with a ‘first-thing’ Monday morning return (no ticket needed to hire if max height below 10m). Good Value I thought, and much cheaper than getting someone in to trim them.
I had to fill the tank when I was finished, but that was only 2 litres of diesel ($4).
(These are only some of the palms I had to trim back)
—————————————————
I once hired a jackhammer for a day. Picked up the afternoon before and dropped it back the morning after. Cost me $50. When Aldi had a jackhammer on Special Buys for $199 I jumped at the chance to own my own. Cheaper than having to hire one every time I need one.
(pic in spoiler)

Five years ago we had a lot of concreting done here. Salinity is a big issue here, and rust had eaten through the base of my verandah posts. When we pulled up our pavers to get concreting done I had to support the weight of our back verandah clear of the line of where concreting was planned. To do this I enquired about hiring Acrow Props. $17/prop per day. I was going to need them for at least a month so I bought 4 from Bunnings for $94 each instead (they are now $119 each). Better than hiring, and I could sell them at anytime to get back most of my money (not that I would ever sell them as I have used them for other jobs).

OP3 years agoI forgot to mention that I have owned a motorhome for 5 years. Because it is 3.3m high I haven’t been able to wash the roof . . . until last Sunday evening when I used the trailer boom lift to get high enough to wash the roof. It has made the world of difference.

OP3 years agoI would imagine that the 10% Everyday Extra and the 10% for Insurance/mobiles would both be available.

For anyone thinking it is getting complicated having so many cards/discounts it can be made simple. You do not have to have the physical card at checkout. You can open the WW app on your phone and use the image of your card in the app.
If you have multiple cards you can use screengrabs of the cards kept in your picture gallery. The beauty of using an image of your cards is that you can add text to the image to help in knowing which card to use and when (shown in spoiler)
and this is the cropped screengrab of that screen with additional notes as reminders and a large “272” in green to easily show which card it is

·3 years agoThanks. I should have looked at the link but just asked as I normally shop at Coles and Aldi. Mind you, there is also a woolies within a few steps of both of them but on the whole I find it slightly dearer there (though it does seem to have a bigger range).
I will send the link on to my two daughters though as they both shop there.
We used to have a Big W at the local shops too (I am Endeavour Hills) but it closed down a couple of years back and we got K mart instead. It's okay but I liked Big W.

We stock up at Aldi when we go to a larger town, and either Kmart or Big W depending which way we go.

·3 years agoThat’s a very good tip about Bpay for regular expenses (including being in credit), s&d. It will also mean no % surcharge by using credit or debit card.
Worthwhile things to do or about which to plan ahead:
reduce heat loss / heat gain during cold weather and hot weather respectively
This is all about making your house as energy-neutral as possible. If your house is well-sealed - yay! Unfortunately most Australian houses leak more badly than a political office when it comes to heat. There are things we can do such as the type of curtains used, putty-filling those little areas open to the outside, using properly sized door snakes anywhere where draught may enter or warmth escape…
Make full-size screens as a project if you have large rooms and can heat just a section of the house.
Is it worth trying the neighbour thing (again) and perhaps having a couple of days a week where cooking is shared to lower costs? (May not be practical, I realise…)
Is it worth considering whether you can rent out a room or two to bring in extra money (with the bonus of reducing pressure on the rental market)? Again, I realise this may be impractical for many.
Unfortunately I can’t think of any way to reduce most of the consistent and very substantial bills that will keep coming in - rates, water, fuel.

·3 years agok1ooo, re the 7 Eleven fuel app. For people that don't know, it scans your closest 5 servos. The 5th servo could be hundreds of miles away depending on where you are. The lock in is valid for 7 days and can be used anywhere in the country, but only once. My best saving was 90c/litre. I decided to check the prices at my destination location and they were horrendously higher. So, I filled up here, then locked in the cheap price, knowing I'd need to fill up to come home. The servo attendant was very impressed by the saving! On Thursday, I saved 19c/L. I was happy with that! Better than 4c at Woolies.
Countess, while we don't use the Woolies insurance, we changed over to Woolies Mobile for the phones a couple of years ago. It also means we get 10% off each month. Sometimes it can be quite a significant saving and it definitely adds up over the year.
k1ooo, re your mention of the Woolies mobile. We both switched over a couple of years ago. It runs on the Telstra network, so mostly reliable. Only had one time it go down, and that was for about half an hour. We have prepaid phones. We get 16GB of data and unlimited phone calls for $20 a month. Even without the home NBN, there is no way we'd get through 16GB in a month! Any unused data carries over to next month.
Spingy's mention of the herbs. Yes, it's awesome to have fresh chemical free herbs. BUT, NEVER put them in your garden. Herbs are essentially weeds, and grow that way. My, what once were beautiful, raised garden beds have been completely over run with herbs. Rosemary and Sage are generally OK, but most will take over everything, so leave them in pots. Especially Marjoram, Thyme and Oregano. As for the coriander Springy, it needs to be planted in winter. By around mid December, it starts to go to seed. Collect those seeds in Jan/Feb for next year's crop! I live in a cold climate that gets heavy frosts and occasional snow. I plant my coriander seeds in July. Oh, and case you didn't know, celery can be frozen! I have my step daughter to thank for telling me that.
From me: Turn your blasted lights off! I have been to so many homes where every single light is on, when it's not necessary. Once dinner is over, we have the light in the rangehood on in the kitchen, and a low voltage smart light lamp in the loungeroom. I don't get the need for lights blazing right throughout the house well into the night.
For cars, refill up when the tank gets to half. A car will use more fuel per KM once it's under half. No idea why, but they do.
If something is on sale, buy extra. You'll use it. If it's perishables, freeze them. Yes, you can freeze celery!
As far as energy bills go, we now pay an amount fortnightly to avoid bill shock. At the moment we are $1200 in front with the gas, and $900 in front with the power. Apparently we are 2 years in front with the land rates! I have the payments set up as a Bpay in my bank, so I'm not physically having to remember to pay them, it happens automatically every fortnight. It's only a small amount each fortnight, but gee it's taken the pressure off. Yes, I can get the excess money back from the utilities if I want it, but I'd rather stay in credit. I have reduced the fortnightly payments so more stays in my bank, while staying in credit. I no longer dread utility bills!

OP3 years agoMobile phone plans
Want a mobile plan that is greatly discounted, or free? Read on.
Last week I saw a ‘story’ on the google search page about a lady sharing a savings tip for mobile phone plans.
I don’t normally read the stories on the google search page, but I did read this one.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/lifehacks/article-11463387/How-save-money-food-Mums-little-known-hack-save-80-groceries-Woolworths.html
In short, if you are a WW shopper who uses WW as your mobile phone provider you can get 10% off one shop per month (up to $50 saving). You can also get discounted WW gift cards. Pay for your shopping using a discounted gift card and you save even more than 10%.
I worked out the cost of my Telstra mobile plans and it is costing me $58 per month X 2 mobiles X 12 months = $1,392 per year.
There are multiple plans available, but the one that provides best value for me is the $200 One Year Sim plan costing $200 per year X 2 mobiles = $400
The WW SIM plan doesn’t offer as much as my current Telstra plan, but here are some of the comparisons:
- 30 mins overseas calls per month on Telstra, zero minutes on WW (I haven’t called overseas for 16 years!).
- 40Gb data allowance per month on Telstra (80Gb shared between the 2 mobiles), 180Gb per year each SIM on WW with data transfer available (so shared data).
- ‘Telstra plus’ rewards program based on account payments, 10% off one shop per month on WW and discounted WW Gift Cards
I needed to get the mobile my wife uses transferred to her name to maximise our savings (2 discounted shops per month). We can transfer our current phone numbers once we activate the SIM.
The reduction in data allowance does not affect me because when we are home we use connect with our home nbn. When we are out we don’t use much data, but will have the equivalent of 15Gb per phone per month on the WW SIM plan.
Over the course of just one year our Telstra plans cost us $1,392 per year and the WW plans will cost us $400. If we can use our 10% off-one-shop on $2,000 (approx $165/month) of groceries we will essentially get our mobile phone plans for $200/year . . . saving us $1,192/year on our current spending.

Springy, for those who can't or don't want to grow their herbs, when you buy, you can chop them up and put them into ice cube trays with a bit of water and freeze them.
Once frozen, transfer the blocks to a container or bag and label.
They can then be thrown into stews/casseroles/soups etc., and there's no waste.

Gives you $5 credit, but charges for calls, SMS and data @
- calls 12c per minute
- standard SMS 12c each
- MMS 35c each
- data 5c per MB
You can top up, and keep the number if you top up again just before the one year is up.
This is a great plan that I have for my second mobile. My wife and I give that number out when buying online or on raffle tickets. This protects my main mobile from nuisance or fraud.
Not sure about transferring a number from another carrier on this $5 plan.

OP2 years agoIt’s been a while since I updated anything on this thread.
Something to add about WW Fuel discounts, if you are in Victoria and have an RACV card, you can get an additional 5c off fuel per litre. You can add the WW 4c and RACV 5c to get 9c off per litre at checkout.
Woolworths have ‘Orange Friday’ specials on for the next week. One of these that is worthwhile is 1/2 price WW Everyday Extra ($35). This is particularly good value for anyone who shops at WW and BigW often. WW Everyday Extra will get you 10% off one shop at WW and BigW each month (max $50 disc on each per month).
To recoup your subscription cost you would only need to save $3 each month. That means if you spend $30 at WW each month and get the 10% discount, you would save $36 in the year. Anything above this is like $ in your pocket.
I am 40 days away from renewing my WW Mobile 365 day plan. WW did increase the price of their plans earlier this year. The difference between the $220 plan and the $170 plan is included data (200GB vs 125GB). I won’t be getting the $220 plan as I have only used 22GB so far this year, and given away 70GB. The $170 plan will suit our needs.
I have kept an excel spreadsheet to track my WW shops and discounts (screengrab in spoiler).
In summary, and with 6 weeks to go, we have recovered the full cost of our mobile plans (2x$200) and the cost of Everyday Extra (3x$59). Better still, our savings have been $960, meaning we are $383 ahead (on 3 cards). Add to this the $1020 in WW Rewards $ and we have saved over 16% on our total shopping total.

OP3 years agoI waited until just a few days before my Telstra payments were due for the next month of mobile before activating the WW Mobile SIMs on our mobiles.
It was a pretty easy activation. We were able to keep our mobile numbers.
The whole switch took about 20mins (including number transfer).

OP3 years agoWW mobile update
all the WW links say that you need to be connected to the WW mobile network for 45 days before you can get a 10% off one shop, but I got 10% off a shop today on the card linked to mobile after just 27 days.

OP3 years agoWW have changed their $150 Long Expiry SIM plan from 6 months to 12 months.
They also have a special offer at the moment of $10 off the $150 plan, with 100GB of data.
If you don’t need much data on a phone plan then this $140 SIM is great value as you also qualify for 10% off a monthly shop (after 45 days on the plan).
The $10 off runs til the end of January 2023.

OP3 years agoI saw a segment on the Channel 9 Today Show this morning about reward cards.
They explained a Woolworths Everyday Rewards Extra savings measure. I then saw on my google feed a Channel 7 webpage article about this WW Everyday Rewards Extra.
https://7news.com.au/lifestyle/woolworths-shoppers-jaw-dropping-finnd-two-days-after-becoming-everyday-rewards-member-c-9494481.amp
You can pay $7/month OR $59 annually to upgrade your WW Everyday Rewards to the Extra status. The $59 equates to just $5 per month so it is better value that $7/month, BUT you are locked in for the year.
https://www.woolworthsrewards.com.au/extra.html
Benefits include:
- first month is free trial, you get billed in second month
- 10% off one shop per month
- 3 x Rewards points on every shop
- exclusive subscriber-only free products, offers and promotions
This is a good way to save more on WW shopping if you do not want to sign up to a WW Mobile Plan that I posted about in earlier posts.

I guess the question I have is can you choose which shop per month gets the 10% off.
I'd be really annoyed if I normally spent eg $100 a week on groceries but they gave me 10% off for a time when I just dashed in for a bottle of milk.

·3 years agoYes, you can choose. We choose which shop based on how many of our higher priced items are on special that week, and add lots of non-perishables like toilet paper.
We've been using it since it started in the middle of last year.
The 10% off is for 1 shop per month at Woolworths, and 1 shop per month at Big W (which we rarely use as there's none nearby).

Seems it a shop of your choice - instore or online.

OP3 years agothank you to those members who have posted in reply to this WW Everyday Extra savings measure to give a fuller picture of how it works.
I signed up for Everyday Extra a few days ago.
Went shopping today and when all items were scanned the checkout person asked me “Would you like to use your 10% off on this shop?”. I said yes and saved $13.99 on my shop. ALSO, I got triple points which came to 3412 points. The triple points meant I got 2275 extra points . . . which is worth $11.37 in Everyday Rewards.
So having paid $59 to upgrade to WW Everyday Extra just days ago I saved the equivalent of $13.99 + $11.37 ($25.36) today by upgrading . . . and this is during the one month free trial of Everyday Extra. I should be able to recoup my $59 AND save hundreds over the course of the year.
If you have a WW Rewards card and get just 3 X $10 Rewards a year that would become $90 on the Everyday Extra . . . which easily covers the $59 annual fee. The rest of the savings would be like cash in your pocket.
Be sure to download the WW app and link your Everyday Rewards card because you then get “boosters” each week though the app (you have to click “Boost” for them to work). I got 5X points boost on Fruit & Veg this week and 10X points boost on some other items. When the 3X points for being in Everyday Extra kicked in a $140 shop earnt me 3412 points whereas it would be 140 points with no boosted items.
Another offer I got through the WW app was to spend $50+ in a single shop for last week and this week to get bonus 3000 points (equal to $15 in Everyday Rewards). My shop today was the second week so I will son get the 3000 points added to my card.

·3 years agoThank you for the advice K1 - I have signed up - $59.
My weekly shop is around $250 - $300 - the savings are obvious.

·3 years agoWhat are you buying? Gold bars?
There's only 2 of you (sometimes 3)
My weekly shop is usually $100 - $120 - only 2 of us.
I need to spend $100 for free delivery and sometimes I struggle to reach that amount, so only purchase when the need arises.
I won't be joining.

OP3 years agoyou are welcome dom, you will really ramp up the points with that sort of spend.
In the WW app with a linked card you can choose to get $10 off a shop when you get to 2000 points or to bank your $10 off until closer to Christmas to ease the financial burden at Christmas. Bank multiple $10 discounts to build the amount substantially. Clicking on your available discounts gets you to where you can make this choice (clicking takes you to a WW Rewards website to authenticate your account).
If you are a Qantas Frequent Flyer member you can convert 2000 WW points to 1000 Qantas points.

OP3 years agoWW recently had their “Tableware” promotion. For every $20 spend you got 1 tableware point. There were ‘bonus’ available each week if you bought particular items.
When you had enough points for a tableware product you just picked the product off the promotion shelf and took it to a checkout and scanned your card and the product was yours.
Over the course of the promotion we managed to get 4 pasta dish rewards (2 per box) meaning we got 8 new pasta bowls without buying stuff just to get the tableware points.

(pic in spoiler)
WW place a $40 value on the box of 2 pasta bowls, but I wouldn’t pay that much, I’d go to Kmart instead.

Coles have had these same sort of promotions based on what you spend. From memory, they once had Jamie Oliver branded kitchen items.
If you are buying from a store that runs a promotion then it is worthwhile so long as you don’t buy stuff just to get promotion credits. For the WW tableware promo 40 points for pasta bowls equates to $800 spent (without any bonus points). No past bowls are worth $800 !
