He always looked a bit worse for wear. Very hard living and no oil painting to start with. But that doesn't really matter when you have a musical soul.
R.I.P Matthew Perry. While he appeared in many things, he was most known for his role in Friends. I never watched Friends, but many people did. Age 54, from an apparent drowning.
I have just found out about Cal Wilson’s death; I can scarcely believe it. She was so vibrant, a petite bundle of wit and the absurdly funny. What a horrible loss to her family and to the world.
Renata Scotto, the great Italian lyric soprano, has died. She was 88.
A highly intelligent and intrinsically musical performer, she sang many of the great lyric roles. She had done incredible successes in Puccini and Verdi roles in particular. Especially I n her youth, the voice was limpid and very beautiful. Even when she retired from singing, her life was still all about the music — as a vocal coach and teacher, as a director…
Oh no! Lola was on our playlist at work on Friday. Everyone sung loudly........even those of us who should never inflict their singing voice onto anyone.
This is one I hoped against hope would turn out to be a case of amnesia or wilderness survival — or something, anything.
Julian Sands, remarkable actor, has died in a hiking accident. He’d disappeared earlier this year but search/rescue attempts were periodically disrupted due to bad weather conditions.
Human remains were discovered 3 days ago, and they’ve just been confirmed as Julian Sands’.
This is horribly sad. A very gifted actor with great intelligence and sensitivity, he had a way creating characters that reached well beyond the screen. I vividly remember his superb performance of the serial killer in “Romasanta”; I just can’t imagine anyone else giving this character the depth and complexity that Julian Sands gave.
Personally, I considered her to be the finest actress I have seen. Inspired by an intense dislike of Margaret Thatcher, she retired from the entertainment industry in 1992 to become an MP in the UK. She certainly lived an interesting life.
Very sad indeed. As for Harris, yes, many celebrities don't exactly live a normal life and it actually annoys me how the media intrude into their private life just to write an article with a title that invites people to click on it. Personally, I don't mind as long as they don't hurt others.
There are so many enormously gifted people who have done terrible things, or — worse — have a skewed moral compass that allows them to continually have hideous behaviours. I hope I’m able to separate the genius or talent from the person; I don’t think there’s any alternative if art, athletic events, music, intellectual prowess, poetry, writing, dance etc are to have any purpose and meaning. But that never ever causes the behaviour. It’s a dilemma.
It never excuses the behaviour, but maybe the way we treat people who are exceptional in one field let's them think they can get away with anything. There were numerous people helping cover up Jimmy Savile's crimes because if it got out it would "tarnish" their charity- probably why he did so much work for so many children's charities.
But I agree we cannot cancel a person's work because they are problematic. Otherwise only saints would be able to create any form of Art.
And don't get me started on those history revisionists!

I think you've hit the nail on the head in that people who are famous for any reason or who have power can be tempted to abuse that power, to have a sense of entitlement.
People in show business apparently knew about Rolf's questionable behaviour years before anything came out in public but chose not to call him out on it.
I also think you are 100% correct when you say we should not cancel a person's work because the person was problematic. Admiring a piece of art or music or talent in any area is not saying you admire the person's private life.
Worth mentioning, even with the awful facts about his disgusting behaviour. He was talented, and I wish he’d never gone down that dark path…
I agree. As a kid, I loved watching him perform. He always gave me a laugh. As an adult, I really appreciated some of his artwork. Sadly, because of his behaviour, those artworks may never be seen again. That in itself is sad, because he was a very talented man.
Not sure if it's worthy of a mention, but Rolf Harris dead aged 93. Apparently it happened around 3 weeks ago, but only announced last night our time. His family kept it quiet so they could have a quiet funeral without a media circus. Can't say I blame them.
Definately worth mentioning! There is so much horror on the news, it's nice to hear the world just got a little safer/ cleaner. I can totally understand the family keeping quiet until after the funeral. People are so aggressively vitriolic these days and they deserve the right to say goodbye without being attacked.

I have often thought that regardless of technical proficiency, voices don't really develope any real "soul" without some form of hardship. Makes you wonder the type of training that occurred back then that so many older singers (not just in opera) can keep singing their entire lives with few if any problems but younger singers are constantly developing nodules or having to take time off for strained vocal cords.
I was home alone this afternoon, so had a bit of a music day (yes, it was loud!). I was listening to his music, having no idea he'd passed. I only just found out from a Facebook post from a friend. I hadn't listened to him in ages, but a song popped up in the menu on the right. I clicked on it to listen, and went from there.
A Victoria Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia they found Zonfrillo's body at about 2am on Monday, after they were called to an address on Lygon Street in Carlton for a welfare check.
His death is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The news reports I read said 2am Monday, so early this morning, not yesterday.
Either way, it's very, very sad. It will be hard for many to watch Masterchef this year, especially his family (if they indeed choose to watch, which I hope they will, so they can see him and hear him). Filming ended a few weeks back.
While they are saying no suspicious circumstances, I'm wondering why there was a concern for welfare at 1am? Maybe his wife had tried to call him several times and no answer. I guess we'll find out in time.
I just hope her and the kids can find the strength to get through this. I can't begin to imagine what they're going through. Just horrible.
