The first stage of new product safety standards for lithium-ion powered e-micromobility products have now been introduced in NSW. These standards regulate the supply of lithium-ion powered e-bikes, e-scooters, and similar products to consumers in NSW.
New Information Standard
In response to recent fires involving lithium-ion batteries, a new Information Standard was published on 19 February. To comply with the new standard, sellers must provide customers with clear and accurate safety information at the point of sale or supply, including details on safe use, charging, storage, fire prevention, and disposal. Further detail on what information must be provided to consumers when listing these items for sale (including example templates) can be found here.
New Product Safety Standards
The new information standard builds on Product Safety Standards, which came into effect on 1 February 2025 relating to these products. Together, these regulations aim to reduce the risk of fire by ensuring safe and compliant products are sold in NSW and that consumers are made aware of how to stay safe when using or charging these products.
