Incorrect postage cost shown on some items

Summary: A participant expressed frustration with the postage system on an online platform, highlighting issues such as incorrect label sizes, missing shipping details, and inconsistent costs which resulted in fines from a postal service. They described difficulties with label printing, citing duplicated postage options and missing satchel sizes, leading to confusion and additional work.

I belive it is an ebay glitch across the Australian ebay pages

The lowest standard Auspost service is $9.70 up to 250gr

Buyers pay on some of my items (individually or combined) up to 250gr for $8.73 (97cents less)

$8.73 is the ebay discounted label price which offered to sellers if they want to purchase the label from eBay.

The listings and the checkout screens should show buyers $9.70

I searched on ebay and saw some sellers having the same issue..tons of listings with incorrect $8.73 postage

I belive the listings with calculated postage having this issue.

Ebays postage is so messed up. It keeps telling me my listing have no postage service. I redo it and it deletes the amount and I have to add it again. After a buyer makes a purchase it gives me the wrong label size and doesnt even say what the weight should be. Then I get a fine from Australia post. Everytime I go to print a label its takes more to sort out what they are trying to get me to print. Theres no exact amount for each label either. It seems to be different everytime. Scroll through the postage options, theres doubles of some. Also some satchel sizes are missing? Its guess sometimes and I get dreads when I have buy a label.

Simple solution. Don't use eBay labels. Use AP and list at fixed price.

And pay selling fees. Swings and roundabouts.

I have contacted ebay multiple times about issues o my accounts.....postage not showing...only local pickup on many listings. I also have no extra small option coming up when I try to list something...I also find if I put over 500g in weight I lose the small satchel option as well. Major nightmare...as of now I have been removing a lot of listing that only show local pickup as the buyer can still purchases the item then I have to send without the postage being paid...also can't mark as sent. Spent 2 hours on the phone in total and still nothing is fixed. Same happens when I try to do a listing on my phone. Strange as I have been on ebay for 20 years and have never had issues like this. I think this all happened in November 2025 .....Have lost many sales due to all this and my discount band on Aus post business.

We’re reaching out with an important update about how postage costs are shown to your buyers when you use calculated shipping on your listings.

    Direct message from ebay

eBay has recently secured new discounted Australia Post rates for sellers using the eBay Labels platform.

'As part of this update, the postage cost shown to buyers in your calculated-shipping listings is now based on these negotiated eBay rates.

    What this means for you

If you’re not using eBay Labels and instead purchase postage at an Australia Post retail outlet, the amount your buyer pays for postage may be lower than the retail counter price you pay in-store.
This is expected because calculated shipping uses eBay-negotiated rates, not retail rates.

If you prefer buyers to see Australia Post retail pricing

If you want your buyers to pay Australia Post retail rates rather than the discounted eBay-negotiated rates, you can switch your listings from calculated shipping to flat rate postage.'

So that's it then. Other option is to inflate the handling. 😞

Just to add to this ; a very odd thing. My daughter received this email from ebay on December 4, but I have not received it on any of my ID's.

Did anyone else get it? It seems strange that it wouldn't go to all sellers.

My daughter uses both fixed rate & calculated. She sent me a copy of it and It just looked like a general bulk lot email, as opposed to one specifically for her.

As did I... which is exactly why the 2 day delay was rather puzzling.

Your final question is rather confronting and somewhat out of line... so I'll just let that one slide on through to the keeper. I hope the quality of your day improves 😊

2 day delay?? - some have other lives - so no puzzle there.

Confronting - please do a favour and re-read most of your answers to simple questions - to those simply asking.

' Slide through to the keeper ' - we let most ' slide ' - as they are not worth the trouble.

As for hoping someone's day improves - rather ' confronting ' - and - totally ' out of line '.

I too did not receive that email. I knew about it because I rang Help Support because I had two international sales that were under-calculated. (I use calculated postage on overseas sales because it varies so much between countries). I was told that I should use Flat Rate to stop the under-calculation. I've never had a problem with ebay postage matching AP rates for internationals before. I said to Support that would mean I will have to put in the highest postage cost and refund most sales (USA is cheaper than UK but I can't risk a UK sale and be OOP $10 or more). It was a very confusing conversation in which I felt the Help agent didn't really understand the situation.

Then a few days later ebay messed with my domestic postage costs offering a buyer a cheaper rate than I had specified for a tracked Large Letter so now I'm OOP for $4.30. So I rang again and was told to use Flat Rate (I already do) but that it goes by weight now (like using own packaging). I have always used Flat Rate 5kg ebay satchels. I asked my local PO if 5kg FR was ending and she said no. I'm very confused and wondering how to edit 500-odd listings, yes I can use bulk edit but it's still very time consuming, when the system before worked very well for me. In the FR ebay postage labels system I was able to put 4.9kg on all the listings and then choose the price of the satchel I had assigned for that item, as long as it was under 5kg it didn't matter. Some items are odd shaped so I use calculated but generally the FR 5gk X-Large and Large boxes accommodate most of my items.

I need Calculated for International and Flat Rate for domestic. Seems I can't have both.

Help support told me there is an email being sent out to explain it all and she could see that I hadn't received it yet. Why aren't the emails sent to all sellers at once? As of 16th Dec I still haven't received it and just read it here in the post above (thanks for that).

The ebay help should be renamed helpless.

My calculated postage has gone from under calculated to over calculated.

If you ring for help they are all very friendly but don't do anything to help.

I have listings that should be 11.15 but ebay is calculating upwards of $20. I'm having to put everything at flat rate.

I won't be using ebay labels.

So it seems the undercharging on [postage is here to stay. Looks like the only way around it, apart from fixed rate, is to up the handling cost.  What a time waster this whole exercise has been and continues to be.

It appears the Ebay customer service crew have been given a new script to read this week with regards to international orders.

When I rang earlier this week - after already been given refunds on previous overseas orders - I was told those refunds were given out by mistake, as there is no problem with the postage charges. As mentioned before, they are now saying it's a problem with Australia Post and that I should be using Ebay labels. The person I spoke to was very arrogant about it, so much so, I had to ask to speak to a supervisor - I'm still waiting for the call-back.

I've double checked my postage-rate policies for international orders and it explicitly states prices based on the rates from 'Australia Post' - it even has the AP symbol.

Yet, Ebay are now using their own label prices when calculating the shipping and have done so without notice to the sellers.

We should be given the option of what carrier we wish to use and have the correct postage charged - it's that simple.

I spent an hour on the online chat and then more than half hour on the phone to them yesterday (following 3 other long online chats with them since this all started earlier this month). The people I dealt don't seem to know anything about the issue. Online chat said they need to keep looking into and no timeframe as to when they can advise me back on resolution. On phone they kept reiterating that ebay charge for calculated postage is the lower amount so the actual Australia Post rate is not relevant. I highlighted the fact that the correct (and relevant!) price is showing but crossed out, but it appeared that they had no idea what I was talking about. It ended with them saying they would raise a complaint and then they advised that actually there was already a ticket raised so there was nothing else to do. If anyone who has successfully obtained reimbursements can suggest any tips for getting onto right team who are aware of this and managing the reimbursements, would love to hear!

Hi there, thanks for sharing this information. I too have incorrect, lower postage amounts on my listings. I have called eBay 6 times since 4 Nov 2025, to be told every time that they have raised a ticket for the IT Department.

When checking my emails today, I saw that I received an email from eBay on 13 Nov with a header “lower AusPost rates for you”. In the details of this deal, found in Seller Centre, the discounted postage amounts table exactly match the lowered postage amounts in my listings.

Now to access the discounted postage when your item sells, you need to be able to print the postage label. I unfortunately do not own a printer. EBay has automatically applied this to my profile and I did not actually OPT IN to this. Therefore when a buyer purchased something from me, they get the discounted postage but I have to pay the full postage at Australia Post.

Needless to say that when I called and advised eBay today that I have figured out the reason why my listings have the incorrect postage amounts, I was told that they will lodge a ticket for the IT Department. 🤦‍♀️

If you have looked at the ebay labels it does say you can print them at the post office. Not sure how it works but may be worth looking into. I have asked them at the Post Office and they said they can print but did not ask how.

I saw that a couple of previous posts mention that eBay will reimburse the under charge if you provide the order numbers. Has anyone had any luck in getting reimbursed as yet or are they saying that they’ll process it once issue has been resolved? I contacted them yesterday and provided all the order numbers to date, and they said they would look into it and email me back.

That someone at Ebay is blaming Australia Post for this is laughable.

Hi, I have also been having this issue and have contacted eBay 3 times. First couple of times was told they are working with A.P.O.  third time I told them that on all my listings you can see the correct postage BUT it's always crossed out and a NEW eBay discounted label price is given instead. So the correct

Price IS THERE just crossed out! I was refunded $10 but told it's just one off.   They have escalated the issue and now waiting for them to call back.

I contacted eBay re this issue only to be told that the fault lies with Australia Post and eBay are working with them to resolve the issue -it's a matter of time before it's fixed.

Wouldn't you think that eBay would have a test area to sample these issues before they release them on the selling community! It would have been more advantageous if they set up an item for this new discount system under its' own section in the postage calculator selection when setting up an item - but who am Ito tell them!

I am band 4 through Australia Post, so unfortunately with eBay now charging customer only a discounted rate, all international post is now nowhere near as discounted (for seller) as it used to be ie make about $1-2 margin with the band 4 discount rather than realising the full discount we previously got. I send my domestic items that rate so that hasn’t been impacted, just the calculated international items. Has anyone come up with a good workaround for this? I thought using a rate table might work and gave a different template for 500g parcels, 1kg parcels etc But I then couldn’t see whether this charges what I have in my rate table (ie rate for UK customer would be different to NZ customer etc) or not.

As mentioned previously, Ebay are aware of the issue with international orders - it's an error and it's still not fixed, but they will credit the balance when you speak to customer service. Just have the order numbers ready, along with the postage amounts that should have been paid.

Mypost business depends on what band you're on.

Postage costs when doing a listing is quoted by ebay as $8.36 - $10.93. They are not 'normal' AP prices of $9.70 & $11.15 etc

I looked the other day and it showed a band 2 discount but as my measurements where too big from the listing it showed a higher price than a 250 gram parcel. When I adjusted the size down it showed the correct price which looked like they are cubing the parcel size. As I have band 4 discount I did not use the label and would have no doubt it would have gone through correctly if I had.

I like the new method of showing the postage price as many of my low priced items would be cheaper compared to those on fixed price. Also easier to factor in a profit margin knowing I wont have to allow for postage cost that varies depending on location.

This is not normal and ebay is heavily undercharging postage. It should not be up to ebay how much postage buyer have to pay, but rather should depend on a business model of each individual seller. It seems to me that Ebay now wants you (seller) to charge discounted rate and to sell you postage label at the same discounted rate. But that means that you will be subsidizing postage partially because you pay fees on postage as well. 250g parcel is 9.70$ AP retail rate, but you never get 9.70$ after fees. AP business discounts allows seller to actually get shipping label for cheaper and hopefully on average match it in price with what they are getting paid by ebay after fees. Hope that makes sense.

Screenshot_20251115_120959_eBay.jpgso I asked ebay again, is this offer for the sellers or the buyers? It is about for purchasing auspost postage labels from ebay for a discounted price and yes its for the sellers...so if this the thing why would you fiddle with the perfectly working postage calculator in your system..i spent hours on the phone explaining and telling them they messed up their system, they already were offering discounted postage so it only could be done to change the discounted postage percentage on the ebay label purchase page..that's all. Now they are misleading as showing 80gr item's postage cost is 15.25 (which is $9.70 at the Auspost counter) a 44% of savings 🤣🤣 wow!  On top of it, buyer paid $8.54 for postage which exactly eBay's offer to me to purchase label from them. "$0" savings minus fvf fees. No thank you eBay I will stick to my auspost business postage rates.

    It's no error, it's profiteering.

By under cutting external AP pricing they're forcing sellers to either take a loss on calculated post or buy post through eBay. They more sellers they con into using their post, the more profit they make. They would be getting extremely low trade pricing from AP because of the shear volume of post they buy, significantly less than the 'discount' they are giving sellers, therefore increasing their profits. Currently changing all my items to flat rate post, I'll be sticking to external purchasing of labels and my own AP business discount. Ebay makes enough profit off me already.

Well as I put a fixed postage on all of my items, I am not so concerned with what is shown to buyers.

In the terms for eBay labels it says it will use either actual or cubed measurement which ever is greater. Normally over the counter don't cube under 1 kg but eBay labels do as the price changes.

With their automated systems they may charge you for excess. It may be an error at the moment and change later but for now just make sure to check if using your own packaging.

It's difficult to know exactly what the measurements of the package will be sometimes, until the item is actually packed. It depends what box sizes are available (our own, not AP). And so are they cubing for things sold in satchels, plastic bags etc too? It would seem so 😞

The whole thing is still an unsatisfactory mess.

In my listings I use a small measurement like 5cm x 5xm x5xm and actual weight. But if printing the label double check as the label may be cheaper over the counter due to it cubing the size.

    And

'The postage service not showing is also a technical issue and has already highlighted by the team.'

I have just searched the terms and condition and found this

The greater of the actual weight or cubic weight equivalent is taken to be the weight in determining the Charge for each Parcel.

Usually under 1kg they dont cube but reserve the right for larger items. This is what they are now applying to all parcels.

So it does seam they have set maximum sizes for each weight but who knows if they will correct this. I have started going through 1000+ items and adjust them accordingly by having small dimensions and having the weight as the heavier of actual or cubed.

    Same issue here.

Had a calculated post of a 50x30x20cm box 2.5kg and the post from APost website to the buyers location was listed as $28.55  After purchase the post paid was $16.98.  That's more than $10 less than APost actual.  No business model can cater for this difference! (am selling some personal collection items incl. a deceased estate)

May have to suspend all sales until they fix it up.

Overseas listings are also currently out of whack, where the postage shown to the buyer is at the rate of the Ebay printed label - not the Australia Post price. For small priced items, this can make overseas sales a waste of time.

Hi there, I am reading this thread as I am having a rather different problem, which I have posted today.

However, a while back, I recall that the XS ebay postage bags were apparently “incorrectly” marked as max 250gm. Everyone seemed to agree that this should be ignored and that up to 5kg was ok?

Now it appears to have done a 360 degrees.

Also is there actually a maximum thickness, my daughter says there is not?

You can pack up to 5kg in an xs ebay postage bag and send it with Auspost directly.

Not sure about sending more than 250g in one using ebay postage until they stop changing the rates!

7cm is the maximum thickness quoted for the xs satchels, but the majority that I've sent have been thicker than that. Until one gets sent back, I'll keep using them for items that fit, regardless of the thickness.

Where did you find that it says 7cm max for a xsmall satchel as I have had 5 so far charged for under paid postage. Last time they said it may have been due to tape on the parcel but no mention of thickness being an issue though it was scanned as 11cm.

I've had none of these extra Small satchels charged for underpaid postage. The ones that were thicker than 7cm, had smaller measurements than the other quoted maximums of 28cm and 21.5cm.

But I have had attempts to charge me for underpaid postage for other sized parcels, which I challenged. The outcome was always that my parcel had gone though the machine with another parcel, giving larger dimensions.

Calculated postage is now priced accordingly to which zone it is in. You will need to either buy your postage on ebay or have a myPost Business account with band 2 or better to avoid paying extra over the counter at the post office.

Your other option would be to go to fixed price postage but those with calculated postage will show a lower postage price to some zones which could sway some buyers who are price sensitive.

These scenarios don’t affect me, as I have ‘fixed price postage’, and I am able to combine, but most of my listings are auction……

For my BINs, I just refund excess postage.

Have been doing this for 15 years.

I do note, that in that 15 years, many threads have been started about: I can’t combine postage any more (sigh), with most replies stating that eBay are preventing it, so they can get more fees 🤨

It sure is! I just spoke to another eBay rep, and he at least could see all the issues. He's raised this as an urgent matter, so fingers crossed enough people are reporting this so it gets fixed asap. As a temporary fix, I added Sendle as another postage option, as that is showing up for customers. At least it's better than having them reach out for postage for them for the time being.

I use MyPost integrated into the store. So, I worked out that by taking off Australia Post Standard as the primary service and using Standard + Signature, the rates are correct! The same goes for Express + Signature. The rates are what they should be say for a small parcel. The regular standard was glitching and charging $18 for a 100g small item. Now its what it should be $11 for a small parcel. Hopefully, this might help others until the problem is solved.

I could only chat to an agent as the call me option was having tech issues. I am not happy with the answer I received and will try to talk to someone. I will copy and paste their response, which makes no sense!!

Their reply - "I have checked and found that the listings says Will post to Australia. Read item description or contact seller for postage options. See details As you have set combine postage rule on your listing if you remove postage rule from your policy then your buyer will be able to purchase the item without any issue,."

I then said "So, we can't offer combined post anymore"

    Their reply -

"You can offer combine postage on your listing but on your policy you have set combine postage rule for which buyer see that Will post to Australia. Read item description or contact seller for postage options"

I said I have had this rule for years and not once have I ever had a customer complain they can't buy.

Please, someone make sense of their response for me because I sure can't!

He said he would escalate my concern and I should hear back within 48hrs. But I will still try and talk to someone on the phone.

New postage rates are now active and vary by destination. I have a few local parcels to send and for x small satchel is $7.28 and a rural at $9.51. Its good to see ebay has finally adopted this method of charging postage based on the different zones as that is how Aust Post does there discounts so now lines up.

Only problem is the need to adjust all the measurements on my items which for over a 1000 listings is going to be a pain. I have always used which ever is higher the actual or cubed weight as my item weight and never worried too much about the dimensions but will need to drop these down as they are having issues with the displayed postage to the buyer.
