78 rpm record sales query
Summary: plumb321 is seeking advice on eBay sales fees and postage issues related to selling records. Despite setting a flat postage rate, eBay's pricing for postage and seller fees resulted in unexpected earnings. They discuss with other participants about using store settings, promotional fees, and postage calculations. Suggestions include using eBay’s flat rate postage and considering how other sellers handle shipping. plumb321 is also considering relisting items to fix pricing errors and managing their listings efficiently while also recounting experiences with packaging and shipping fragile records.
Can someone explain to an absolute "newbie" if this would be correct
I just sold a record for $25 , Ebay adds on $2 odd for protection
I listed postage at $15, Ebay charged $23 odd
At the end it appears I have received $12.20 "earnings"for the sale??
Sorry I can't do a screen shot to show you but does this sound correct?
I 2 days ago set all my postage at $15, is this possible to have altered the postage on my previous sales as the balance owed it less than yesterday by around $50 odd.

·4 days agoSo, whether you post 1 or 6, it would be the same cost at flat rate?
plumb321
OP4 days agoPretty much, I can eat a dollar here or there but at $15 postage each and a discount for two or more sales to the one buyer, easily send 3 or 4 for $22 which is a big saving for the buyer and I have made 2 or 3 sales

·4 days agoHave you checked other similar sellers to see what they’re charging? How are they sending? Are they using flat rate?
twyngwyn
·4 days agoSo, you could still pack as usual, then use Auspost satchels?
twyngwyn
·4 days agoLol, you don’t have much competition 👏
plumb321
OP4 days agoOnly around 2500 78rpm records for sale in Australia at any one time!! lol
twyngwyn
·4 days agoAnd most of them are in USA…. so exorbitant postage
plumb321
OP4 days agoAustralia has 3100 78rpm records for sale at the moment....
twyngwyn
·4 days agoAlso, I believe you will have a store for a full calendar month, now that you’ve changed. So editing those low postage costs might be your first step.
Happy to be questioned on this
plumb321
OP4 days agoFunny you say that because Ebay is blocking me at the moment from altering any postage, perhaps delete the lot and relist in a month? Seems crazy.
twyngwyn
·4 days agoYou have choices. You can put your store on ‘time away’ for 30 days & hide your inventory or you can end the listings with low postage with reason ‘there was an error’ then they will go into your unsold items for up to 60 days, while you work it all out
plumb321
OP4 days agoCheers, that is what I will probably do , 75 years old, just trying to get rid of my excess records , proving harder than I thought although I have made some good sales in the 3 weeks as have some more unusual records!

·4 days ago · EditedYour postage seems to be calculated, rather than flat rate. Checked out your sale of the teddy bear picnic.
Sale price $25 (buyer protection included) as the buyer protection is incorporated into you seller final value fee, which is 13.4% of the total invoice.
When I change delivery postcodes, the potage cost changes dependent on zones, so you will not see the correct cost when checking postage cost to your own postcode.
plumb321
OP4 days agoYes, I did try to adjust all postage to $15 , now going through and eliminating all that, I just felt the postage charges were to high , as you know, no one wants to buy a record for $25 then get charged $23 postage. Each record postage was being assessed at 5kg and certain sizes , it would automatically adjust back despite me putting in a more appropriate weight and size and I was trying to get around that. Is this what you meant to tell me or have I misunderstood TiA.

·4 days agocubic weight….I charge $23 for an X/L satchel…..I use prepaid everything and flat rate to anywhere in Australia. Are you using own packaging?
plumb321
OP4 days agoyes I am, very unusual packaging! I wedge the records in their sleeves between two pieces of plywood, slightly bigger than the record and tape tightly, you could use it as a frisbee and it will not break the record inside , been doing it for years.!
plumb321
OP4 days agoLess than a kilo
gutterpunkz05
·4 days agoUse the flat rate postage option, no need to enter weights and measures, you set the cost including any handling/packing costs you wish to include, the buyer will be charged your set price australia wide.
At the moment I see
$10.47 Karalee - Karalee
$13.44 Karalee - Perth
$15.68 Karalee - Central Qld.

OP4 days ago🤣not sure what happened there,no idea....
Will snooze for this month and start again November.👌

·4 days ago · EditedI looked at a few of your listings and each one I looked at showed a different postage price ?
plumb321
OP4 days agoYes, the other person who replied forced me to go and check, they are all altered, I cannot post them for that price given the care required to pack the very fragile shellac records. Some are $7.61 aud
Do I have to go thru and adjust all the postage prices on each item??
This has happened since I went in and adjusted /set at $15
I did join the STORE at the basic no fee level , should I get out of that?
Thanks for the advice
twyngwyn
·4 days agoIf you go to ‘free selling’ you will have buyer protection added to your price, will be required to purchase eBay labels. But you will not pay fvfs.
With a store, you can go to seller hub and bulk edit your postage.
plumb321
OP4 days agoI won't take up any more of your time, just one last question. My original about the sale query was prior to me joining the Store.
$12.20 was my return for the sale of a $25 record? The total charged the buyer was $42?
twyngwyn
·4 days agoBut postage was $8 short. Did you also accept an offer?
twyngwyn
·4 days agoIf you accept an offer, whilst free selling, buyer protection is taken out of your funds
plumb321
OP4 days agoNo I did not take an offer but it was promoted which is 9% I believe. I have just stopped the STORE and gone back to free listings , looks like I am going to have to go back into each listing and adjust the potage..106 items. This all come about as Ebay was setting the postage way to high and we could not adjust it back down to a fair level, bearing in mind that Ebay makes their profit on the postage as they would do a huge bulk deal with Australia Post.
twyngwyn
·4 days agoThere are MANY threads here about eBay labels…..this is one of the reasons I have a store. Good luck. If I were you, I would remove ‘make an offer’
gutterpunkz05
·4 days agoPromotion fees are in addition to FVF, so with the store you would be charged 13.4% FVF plus a separate add fee set by you at 9% if sold via promotion. Without the store you will need to buy ebay postage labels and the add fee will still apply.
twyngwyn
·4 days agoYou have a store, so you don’t charge ‘buyer protection’…..but you pay fvfs
twyngwyn
·4 days agoJust looked at a few of your items…..postage is not set at $15.
plumb321
OP4 days agoThat is interesting because I set it 2 days ago, I have over 106 records listed and checked a few and assumed they had been been set as that is what Ebay alerted me to , maybe it was for future sales?
But I still have the original query, thanks for replying by the way as I am trying to understand the actual costs involved in selling these items which are not in demand anyway and very breakable being shellac
