Bidding to not pay multiple times, from multiple accounts

Summary: The discussion is centered around concerns and strategies related to bidding without having to pay multiple times across different accounts. johnc-au initiated the conversation, leading to a series of responses from *casey*, gutterpunkz05, and sandypebbles. Each participant appears to be sharing their experiences and possibly looking for advice or solutions to manage bidding effectively without incurring multiple charges. The exchange includes several direct responses and follow-ups to clarify points and share further insights.

There is something strange going on where I am trying to sell a phone.
I keep getting bids from accounts with no feedback, no real history. Some registered in the week of the listing.

Some have been accounts that sell refurbished products. Eventually there is a winner, again someone with no feedback.
I wait and send messages about payment with obscure responses like "i need to wait until x date until i get paid", or another was suddenly asking questions about the item that are in the description. Every time just before I can cancel the sale due to non-payment, they go and cancel the order themselves preventing me from saying non-payment.

If I reject the cancellation, it goes into a strange state where nothing happens. It just sits there with no payment and I can no longer mark it as non-payment.
If I accept it, I can't say they didn't pay.

It has happened with the same item 3 times in a row, I just can't sell it because people keep not paying.
It feels like there is some angle in resellers trying to get their items sold over mine, or pushing prices up.

The next thing that happens after I re-list is someone comes in with a low-ball offer to buy it, which could also be another angle.

I contacted eBay and they just said to block the buyers, which doesn't help because they are all different and sometimes new accounts.

    Has anyone seen this?

You have left them positive feedback for doing so, so clearly you are happy for them to do it, to encourage others to do it and put your account at risk for breaching policy of 'false positives'

I tried leaving negative feedback on one. When i did it marked it as positive. I didn't realise that sellers leaving feedback always created positive feedback. It can't be deleted also.
I haven't left feedback on any others.

You seem to have sold the same phone 3 times, with none of the sales being cancelled, so ebay fees will still be payable.

They have been cancelled. eBay has confirmed they have been cancelled.
eBay just says to list it again and block the users.

Item sold 15th Jan  and 4th Feb,  both still show in your sold items, which should not be the case if the transactions have been cancelled and would indicate ebay fees still apply.

Item sold  11th Feb, still appears in  sold list, and the buyers time to pay has not expired.  I also note that this item was listed on the 4th of Feb, before the sale on 4th Feb could be cancelled for non payment.

It seems like something is broken here.

Correct, and if you  ignore the request /  do nothing in the 3 business days, eBay will  automatically cancel the order anyway !

Your best bet would be to list as a Buy It Now ( not an auction ) with immediate payment required

Selling as buy it now means accepting that ebays bidding system is broken.

You're very lucky if this hasn't happened to you before.

Depending on your target market, placing bids on auctions has always been a 'game' to some users.

It gets worse in the school  / uni holidays.

"I contacted eBay and they just said to block the buyers, which doesn't help because they are all different and sometimes new accounts"

And the nuisance buyers will just keep opening new accounts and eBay will keep telling you the same thing.

    Rinse and repeat

It's already happened to you 3 times and BIN with immediate payment is the best choice  if you really want to sell the item without going through these problems time and time again.

Using that format, the item's not sold until it's been paid for.
