Help… I’m trying to sell something and I think I’ve stuffed up

Summary: tarysmit-9 is attempting to sell an item but believes they have made a mistake in the process. Responses from domino-710, sandypebbles, and springyzone indicate a discussion around this issue, but the exact details of the advice or assistance offered are not provided in the content.

I posted an add to sell something on eBay. I haven’t done it before. The buyer wanted it posted. I went and got the price from Aus post and it was expensive. So I told the buyer I would pay half the postage. He asked me to send an invoice? How? So I sent a message to him to say how much it would cost with the postage added. I then realised I don’t know how he would pay me. I sent my bank account details. And eBay block his emails. How do I send an invoice with only half the cost of postage? How do I get paid. There is no phone number to call eBay. I’m lost.

Unless you have signed up for managed payments, you will never get any money from an ebay sale.

Buyers do not pay direct into your bank account. The money goes to ebay and ebay has your details. You can then arrange to withdraw your money from managed payments.

New sellers though have a hold on funds, usually for about a month. This hold remains on funds until a person becomes what ebay views as a regular, reliable seller. Even ebay members who have been on ebay for years and sold in the past have this hold applied if they have not sold lately.

It sounded as if you had sold something but had a hold up with arranging payment but when I looked, I could not see any completed listings.

So do you mean you had someone who sent a message to say they would like to buy if you could arrange postage?

It is a no no to send private bank account details via messaging as ebay might view that as you trying to arrange payment outside ebay & to avoid fees. I know that was not your intention, but be aware. You could find yourself banned by ebay.

I think you may have avoided problems if this potential sale has not worked out.

If you are not signed up for managed payments, delete your ad. Get signed up first.

When that has been sorted, you can relist but if I were you, I would either raise the price and say free postage or I would list a postage price in the ad ( & I would not be offering to subsidise half of it.)

Your safest bet might be to just raise the price to cover postage within Australia and block any overseas sales.

You can contact ebay via the help tab. You'll get onto a robotic service first, typing back and forth but if you persist you get the option to chat to a real person.

I think your first action though has to be to get signed up to managed payments and to delete your ad if you are not signed up as you could  get yourself in a complete tangle otherwise.

    To answer your last question

You get paid by signing up to Managed Payments and being verified to sell before you list anything

That is the ONLY option to be paid

Your funds are then on hold for 14-30 days

Who did you send you bank details to?

If you mean you sent them to the potential buyer. that is selling 'off eBay' which is a huge no-no and will land you in big trouble with eBay

Plus if the buyer opens a dispute, eBay will not cover you and you will lose both the item and your money if the buyer opens a bank charge back

You will also still owe the fees for 'selling'

And you should not be emailing each other in the first place, all communication is to be via eBay messages only and you cannot share details if no sale has been made

You do not need a phone number and there isn't one

But you seriously do need to read up on the selling basics before proceeding with the sale or this is going to end very badly with you losing the item, your money, your eBay account and eBay getting the debt collectors on you to recover fees owed

Hi Sandy, thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I have only been messaging him on the eBay email messaging thing. I’m new to this and I have stuffed up. I think I will just take it off and try again another time when I can get some one to help me. Thank you again

    People here have helped you

And yes, the best idea is to take the listing down until you have done what is required of you as a seller

(as in complete sign up to Managed Payments and be verified to sell before you worry about anything beyond that)
