My Louis Vuitton handbag has been deemed a fake, but it was bought in Paris at the Vuitton Shop!
What the hell?
This was gifted to me by a lovely old gentleman who took his dear wife to Paris and insist he buy her a Louis Vuitton handbag. Of course he didn't keep the receipt. He bought it nearly two decades ago! She barely used it. She's now deceased. He wanted me to have it, but EBAY are now deeming it a fake! Will try to sell on another online platform or take it to someone who knows what they're talking about!
Won't try to sell on EBAY ever again. Will stick to good old Aussie Gumtree or Marketplace!
Very disgruntled EBAY customer!

I prefer the LA version, so naturally went with that.

·2 years agoAnd you believe this lovely old gentleman went to Louis Vuitton and not the local junk market for his lovely wife. The oldest one in the book,
Really, why should Ebay allow your fake products through,

·2 years agothank you for the complement.
Its the oldest trick in the book, husband/ wife say they bought this expensive thing, but really not. It was 20 years ago, do you really believe that Ebay authentication is dodgy.

·2 years agoI don't believe ebay authentification is dodgy. Not in the least.
But it is also possible the bag actually is authentic. The story as told is that the man took his wife to Paris and insisted on buying her a LV bag. Sounds as if she was right there with him.
These bags do sell. Not that I would personally pay out for one, but there are some customers who do.
I think it is possible that the authenticators could make a mistake sometimes, especially if a bag is quite old & maybe some design features have changed. I'd say they have to err on the side of caution & if not sure, would not pass it. But we're all human and mistakes can be made.
We've had other people on here from time to time who have sounded genuinely upset about the same issue.
The bottom line though is we can't know for sure & the people who could clear it up are dead and gone. Without a receipt, shrit will either need to go to a different authenticator or else keep the bag as I doubt anyone would pay out the sum she might want without some form of proof the bag is authentic.

·2 years agoOh I know someone who actually went into the local LV store here in Melbourne and bought a very expensive one, and it now sits in the wardrobe, as they are to scared to take it out even though they had to increase the insurance.
And I did read the story as told, and yes luckily I do believe in the tooth fairy as well, it often visited around 20 years ago just about when this bag was purchased.

·2 years agoGood grief, I hadn't even thought of extra insurance costs.
How the other half lives, I guess.
Sugar, you don't believe in tooth fairies? How cynical.😁
I am probably even more cynical than you though.
I wouldn't say the ebay verification team is necessarily always 100% infallible.
I don't have that sort of faith in anyone or any institution.
Shrit isn't going to be able to sell this bag on ebay though. Not as a genuine LV.

·2 years agoOh I agree there, but you have to think they havent just picked someone up of the street to do this job, and it is an exact science, at what they look at. Ebay are offering this service for free, because they want to protect Ebay's name for only selling genuine bags, and avoid the cost of the MBG because of scammers .
shrit could also take it to another authenticator, they are around and only charge a smallish fortune, so if it's real as the lovely gentleman said, it will be worth it. Or they could sell it on Market place or other places, and it becomes someone else ''genuine' problem.

·2 years agoI would not say $60 to get a bag authenticated is a small fortune. But maybe to some it is.
sugar249
·2 years agoWell in that case OP will be more than happy to pay the $60. LOL
springyzone
·2 years agoTotally agree. I think the ebay verification team do the best they can and they would have specialised knowledge.
However, if shrit is convinced they have made a mistake, then it is worth the $60 or whatever it costs to go to another authenticator.
If they too fail it, then she will pretty well have her answer.
If they do provide verification, then she can sell it elsewhere, not on ebay though.
Marketplace-you'd absolutely have to have verification & sell in the right category or you'd be offered $5 for it.
Just a stray thought-do many people look at people's bags to see brand names? I can't say I have ever noticed people's bag brands but I don't move in LV circles, I guess.

·2 years agoVery good question, I never have, and the one I am aware of is hidden in the ladies wardrobe, so it has only ever come out for bragging purposes.
I'll check next time I'm at the local shopping centre how many I see.
Just a PS, they struggled to get approval for a home loan, whereas the cost of the LV would have given sufficient with plenty of leeway. But I don't think the bank were interested in holding a bag as collateral )even if authentic).
imastawka
·2 years agoBut.....you didn't personally buy it in Paris at the Vuitton shop, did you?
springyzone
·2 years agoYes, you'll need to go elsewhere to sell it. It does sound genuine but once the verification team make a judgement for ebay, that's pretty much it.
Why not keep it yourself as it sounds as if that is what the man wanted?
You're going to face problems on sites such as gumtree or marketplace over the same issue-a lack of verification or proof.
Maybe look for a dedicated LV facebook site.
sandypebbles
·2 years agoNot to mention the amount of scammers on Facebook Marketplace who would as soon come back to see what other valuables you may own as look at you
In any case OP, eBay have no idea if you sell on the site or not, so it's not going to affect them in the slightest
