PayPal payment can not be seen - I want to refund sale but buyer claims he has already paid? How can I get some clarity if money has in fact been paid.The item I removed for sale a year ago. Would PayPal have buyers money in limbo?

If it's not showing on the "Orders awaiting postage" page, then it hasn't been paid through eBay. Did you receive an eBay notification, or an email from an alleged buyer (scammer)? If it's the former, the item will show as described above... but if it's the latter, it won't show there. In this case, simply block, delete and ignore.
