Sellers to the US are now charged Duty, Customs fee etc. at time of lodgement.

Summary: huonpine raises an issue regarding recent changes to Australia Post charges for shipping to the US, where sellers are unexpectedly paying import duties and fees at the post office, contrary to eBay's guidance that buyers should pay upon receipt. Other participants offer suggestions and experiences; lezned-toycollector recommends adding handling fees, while jjba6541 notes that items under $100 seem exempt from these charges. love_of_cars explains the 'Landed costs' options available through MyPost Business, but lezned-toycollector mentions that for US shipments, the options are limited, forcing sellers to pay via a Zonos account. huonpine shares their strategy of invoicing US buyers before payment to account for duties, but expresses frustration with the system.

How are you all dealing with the recent Australia Post changes to US addresses? We as the seller are currently being charged Import Duty etc. at the Post Office .

eBay's response to my questions is that the BUYER is charged at the receiving end.

This is NOT be the case at all.

Today I was charged $17.85 import duty & taxes $2.53 Admin & Handling Fee, & $1.07 Customs fee on an item which sold for $175. Note that this was paid by me as the seller on lodgement at the Post Office.

I would be pleased to hear back from others with the same problem

In MyPost Business there are three options in regards to this for the 'Landed costs'. Surely the people at the post office have similar choices for you?

    Landed costs

Landed costs apply at the destination country you have selected. These are duties, taxes and fees, charged by some international governments on imports. Australia Post doesn't handle these costs, but you must declare how they'll be paid. Learn more about landed costs options.

Select how landed costs will be paid:

[o] Receiver - pay at destination

[o] Sender - pay using a Zonos Verified Account

[o] Sender - pay using tax ID

While those options are visible, for shipments to the US, the first and third radio buttons are both greyed out.

The sender has the option of paying through a Zonos account, or paying through a Zonos account. Alternatively they can pay through a Zonos account, and if that doesn't suit them, they could always pay through a Zonos account.

Unless the sender selects the radio button beside the Zonos option, they can't save the order.

Hi there lezned-toycollector. My post office lady has said the same thing. No option for the buyer to pay at the receiving end. How are you dealing with this issue ? I have stated on my listings that "US customers please wait for an invoice to be send out before payment". This then allows me to add the duty. Once the client has paid there is no way of billing the client, so it's a trust arrangement. Regretfully It seems to be becoming too difficult to deal the US system. :(

It's not an issue. I just let Zonos do what they're paid to do.

@huonpine yes I just got hit $50 at the post office. Sure it was old and over $100. Most of my items are not in this category. Is there no way in this new brave world that, when a seller to the US pays the import that it can't be recouped? We either up the price to the disadvantage of non-US buyers or just don't sell to US, for the meantime at least?

It's not a problem at all. Just add a handling fee for international purchases, and Bob's your uncle.
