Would You Smack Someone Else's Child?

This topic came up on the Yumi and Sami Breakfast Show this morning. Usually I can't stand listenening to them and switch to another station after the mystery voices, but I found this interesting:

Yumi throws an Easter birthday party for her daughter whose birthday falls just before.

She invites a heap of kids. Hides heaps of easter eggs in the park opposite and on a signal, lets the kids loose to hunt for them.

This kid, whose bigger than the rest, races out before the signal and grabs all the eggs before any of the other kids can get them.

This happens several times. Yumi puts on her scary face, reprimands him, but he still does it. His parents can't control him either.

Yumi feels like giving him a smack.

Sami says no way, you can't do that.

Yumi says if there was an invisible bubble and she could've smacked him without any repercussions, she would have.

They asked for listeners to call in with their opinions.

Most said no way, one said yes, one said Yumi should have asked the parents to take action or take their child home.

I wouldn't smack someone else's child.

What would you have done?

Smacking someone's kid especially in front of plenty of witnesses would be opening yourself up to possible legal action on the parents' part. Definitely not a good idea however obnoxious the kid might be. Yes, ask the parents to cart their brat off.

You wouldn't believe some of the personal stuff those girls talk about on air, about their friends, too.

She once mentioned a "fat koala on a skinny" tree in reference to her friend needing a brazilian wax.

No way would I smack someone else's child. First I would try explaining to the child why they should 'nt be doing whatever they're doing then I would be asking the parents to take them to the car for awhile if they were spoiling something for all the other kids

Like debra said, clear explanations is often all that is required.

Well, I HAVE smacked someone else's child. My brother's son. I was staying with my brother and my SIL in Sydney, and I took his kids to the park. On the way home, one of my nephews decided to run through the busy streets ... there I was, nearly 9 months pregnant, with three kids 5 and under, (not counting mine), and he wouldn't stop running - even across roads. So, there was me, waddling fast to catch up with him, breathless from shouting at him, and when I did catch up, I gave him a whack on his rump.

I was congratulated by both parents ... who didn't smack ... so this was his first ... he didn't forgive me for years. BUT, he was endangering himself, me and his brother and sister.

In general, no I wouldn't smack anyone else's child.

I've had day dreams about smacking someone else's kid at the shops when they nearly trip me over. I wouldn't smack someone else's kid but I might slap a relative's kid

Katy...To smack a child because they are running dangerously close to roads in my opinion is understandable... it is a danger factor and needs to be addressed quickly... you can't talk sense into a kid at a time like that.

To smack a child because of the circumstances that Yumi is talking about shows a lack of authority. She has no way to controlling the child so wants to use violence.

and who hides eggs in a park.. yukky.

I would of liked to smack the child, but I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't smack my nephew (I'm not even allowed to say no to him)

no i would not smack another person's child, and woe betide anyone who raised their hand to mine.

oh and i have hidden eggs in a park for a treasure hunt - the kids had a blast, all the parents got a smile from watching their kids so excited.

Its one of my treasured memories of my kids younger years.

Thanks for the positive comments ...

I don't agree with regular smacking, but I think smacking has its place ... for example, I had told my son NOT to put a plastic bag on his head ... and why. He did it ... and I smacked him ... sometimes it sends a message that words don't.

When I talk about smacking ... I'm talking about a light whack on the nappy region.

When my son was about 16 months old, we traveled from Australia to Britain ... I'd bought all sorts of food and toys for my son and had them in my carry on luggage. We sat next to two parents and their child who was about the same ages as my son. He displayed interest in my son's toys and foods and wanted to play with the toys and eat the foods. Every time he touched anything, his parents hit him. I said that it was fine with me, and that the kids could share ... but it was hit, smack, hit, smack.

I tried to keep smacking to important/safety situations ...
