ive read this canvassed elsewhere. the issue is careers of short duration, not just footballers. bob nicked the idea from someone else, i dont recall who exactly.

The problem is that they can earn so much during that short career that they don't need any tax breaks, imo.

Does a player earning $500,000 pa really deserve a tax break?

i'm not advocating such a thing, its just that i heard the same topic raised in a broader fashion than bob's plan, radio national or suchlike. its not uncommon to see a player de-listed at 20 odd yrs of age when he's trained for nothing else. at 29 its quite a blow i'd say.

but of course all occupations have hazards.

I didn't think you were advocating such a thing.

Perhaps the footy players and others in high careers with a risk of short prospects is to get them to invest some of their hard earned for when the sun goes down on their career, or perhaps a sort of super fund that some earnings can go into for later.

i think the AFL do administer a fund of some sort, but i don't know the details.

Maybe the scheme should be extended to the CUBs working FIFO in the mining game - the type that can't see past their first V8 SS ute ....
