We need to take a balanced look though, not only look at the bad and conclude all the young are like it.

As parents of young transitioning adults we should not be authoritarian. It does not work. It leads to rebellion and ends up with opposite of what is desired. We need to communicate and teach our kids how to make good decisions not scare them into submission by authoritarian attitudes.

What a generalised load of claptrap about a whole generation of young people.

Living in denial is unhelpful.

Nobody said ALL the young are like it, but it's a large and worrying trend that shouldn't be poohed poohed off as harmless.

Generation Of Girls At Risk

This article by Miranda Devine in last weeks telegraph caught my eye and thought it would make for interesting discussion here:

Secrets of the hookup culture

"THERE is one domain in which woman have always reigned supreme, and that is the business of coupling, procreating and child rearing. Therefore, if you influence women, you influence the fabric of society. Which is why feminism has been such an important weapon in the armament of the left.

But feminism has now gone well beyond redressing genuine inequality to advocating behaviours and attitudes that damage women, and threaten the health of society. The evidence is there to be seen for anyone who cares to look, in the annals of psychological disorders that afflict so many young women today."

http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/mirandadevine/index.php/dailytelegraph/comments/generation_of_girls_at_risk/

"The zipless f ... eulogised by yesterday’s feminists has become the norm for Gen Y in the form of a too-often joyless, mechanical and regret-filled hook-up culture. Secks and human connection, let alone love and compassion, have effectively been decoupled in the hook-up culture, in which dating has given way to no-strings-attached physical encounters.

The term “hook-up” is exactly as dehumanising it sounds, and a fascinating study by the American Psychological Association last month shows how disconnected are the seckual behaviours and private internal desires of young men, and especially young women.

Yet the establishment’s concern and outrage is marshalled against the rare piece of advice from elders that might offer an antidote to despair."

"Meantime, out in the real world, The American Psychological Association review, “Sexual Hookup culture” shows the disturbing psychological consequences, for both men and women. They include unwanted sex (mostly alongside alcohol and substance abuse), profound regret and feelings of shame, emptiness, and in some cases depression."

I despair also for the generation after this one...

Well weren't we all Duff?

Actually people have been "hooking up" since humankind appeared on Earth. The proof of that is the fact that we're here typing away at each other.

The point that's being made is that for Gen Y, casual secks is just another bodily function to gratify, like scratching your nose or or squeezing a pimple. A quick gratification that is otherwise pointless and meaningless and quickly dismissed.

Yet, from the article:

“Sexual Hookup culture” shows the disturbing psychological consequences, for both men and women. They include unwanted sex (mostly alongside alcohol and substance abuse), profound regret and feelings of shame, emptiness, and in some cases depression.

Saddest of all is that while most men and women did not expect a romantic relationship as the outcome of a hookup, fully one third of men and almost half of women “ideally wanted” such an outcome.

Also note the sentence: "They include unwanted sex (mostly alongside alcohol and substance abuse)"

which does not augur well for a child conceived accidently in this way.

I don't know why I keep changing it to secks. It appear one can get away with much worse here these days.

So where do you find meaningful relationships if all anyone wants to do is "hook up"

Bars?

Parties?

Oh yes so do I.

But there are also lots just "hooking up". And it's disempowering for young women and men alike. Instead of empowering as we were led to believe back in the 60s

It's just and endless treadmill of partying, hooking up, then doing it all over again next weekend.

Next minute your'e 30 and wondering what the rest of your life is going to be all about.

I guess that's when IVF and sperm donorship comes in.

One of the problems as I see it is that young women are simply not growing up - at 30 they are still giggly 19 year olds.

I watched an episode of Socks In the City once - the only one I ever watched. It started with one of the 'girls' in bed with her latest boyfriend. As things are starting to warm up she lets drop a tiny little squeak of a fart. Immediately she jumps out of bed covered in embarrassment and confusion, gets rid of her socks partner as quickly as she decntly can and spends the rest of the episode agonising with her girl friends over how humiliated she is and how can she ever face the man again.

I thought, get real girlie - you are supposed to be a mature high-achieving 30 something. When I was your age I had a husband a mortgage and 5 kids. Farting in bed was the least of my problems.

That's the point isn't it She-el?

At 30 you had taken up your life, well and truly.

At my work, a colleague had taken up her life at age 11, running the household for her sick mother.

Responsibility was taken and exercised.

Gen Y laughs it off. Goes to the next party. Has another drink.

It's the way they've been influenced.

yes but they're only living up to their expectations, aren't they, Crystal?

Young women are expected to look gorgeous and to party, party, party. Life is for living. Right? Enjoy it while you're young. Right? Except when it's not fun anymore.

Young women in previous generations were expected to step up to the plate, get a husband, have kids, run a household, be a contributing member of the community.

What expectations would you have for your daughters? And for that matter, your sons?
