While we're talking NDIS...

Should the LOO and his team been in attendance (they are paid to be there) for the introduction of the legislation yesterday?

I saw some photos of both times the NDIS was introduced. The first time hardly anyone on the opp side attended. Yesterday they all chose to ignore the event.

They should be ashamed, imo. Abbott said it's (disability policy) waffly talk that should not be discussed in question time.

This historic Bill is a one-off. It should have been a day of celebration for the disabled, their families and their friends, and a celebration of our nation shared by all!

Iza, I don't know your personal situation although I understand that you accept that the NDIS may not affect it and that you are happy for it to help others. Seeing how much you have invested emotionally I hope with all my might that the bill realises your expectations.

The PM had been working hard to get this bill agreed to for the last few weeks, met a lot of the disabled and their families, probably had about four hours sleep each night, then to be slapped in the face by the opposition on the day, no wonder she was emotional about that and her success. IMO the opposition had no choice but to go along with it, I doubt they would have done it if in office.

I do too EM.I think it's a sign that voices are being heard and may continue to be (more so than they have been I hope).

True. I have no doubt they would never have introduced such a policy.

If not for it being so popular I doubt they would have let it pass.

What has astounded me is that they just refused to sit in parliament for the vote on this.

They also refused to vote last year, then bragged about how nice and humane they are by not opposing it.

I equate that with turning their backs, of having no respect for those who're disabled.

I am trying to find out what yesterdays legislation was about...

If Gillard did put this up without the opposition being able to have their say then this is very wrong and makes it look like the opposition did not care..... but I am sure they all had their say last sitting..

Passed on the 14th March....

The bill, which will allow the scheme to be launched from July, passed with the support of all MPs.

In an emotional speech on Wednesday morning, Ms Gillard introduced the bill that will increase the Medicare levy from 1.5 to 2 per cent from July 1, 2014 to fund the new national disability insurance scheme.

It was a deliberate ploy on the part of Gillard to make the opp look uncaring, TA was at a radio interview and did not know it was being done, not many of the labor people were there either so they probably weren't aware either OR DID NOT CARE.

Again another disgusting display by JG, pretending to be caring, crying like a blubbering idiot and using the NDIS as another election issue.

This is bigger than both sides of politics and should not be used as a vote buy.

Not quite true. It passed with the support of all MPs WHO WERE PRESENT IN THE HOUSE.

I wonder if anyone can provide a breakdown, because if a photo I saw is anything to go by, the opposition benches were pretty much empty.

After the speech, which was given to near-empty opposition benches, Ms Gillard was embraced by Disability Reform Minister Jenny Macklin. Ms Gillard said that ''every cent'' raised by the increase in the Medicare levy would be allocated to a special fund over the next decade. By law, the fund will only be spent on supporting people with disability.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott was in a radio interview at the time and not present for the speech.

Earlier this month, when indicating his support for the levy increase, Mr Abbott called for the bill to be brought forward before the election.

''We do want to see this come into the parliament in this term,'' he said. ''There's five weeks of parliament remaining and I don’t see why we can’t get this dealt with so that this parliament does have a substantial monument.''

While the government benches were also not full, there was a significantly better attendance from Labor MPs and ministers.
