yes and no. you have st vinnies and the salvo's etc, lots of good things done/funded etc by church based charities. then on the other hand you have extremism, and abuse of position.

i doubt it's something you can measure with any accuracy.

I think yes..... for example: I have been involved in looking at nursing homes recently....... all the well run, nicer ones are run/owned by Religious Groups, Catholic, Uniting Church, Brethren, to name some. They are not for profit and give some really great support to residents (and families)

Reminds me of that bible passage that asks of those fighting 'holy wars'..... 'If god be for me, then who could be against me?" - meaning neither side are fighting in the name of God - thou shalt not kill kinda thing.

R & B, with respect, I'm seriously not interested in having a full blown theological debate...= too exhausting, but I respect the fact that you are knowledgeable and passionate in that subject.

I agree that RELIGION has been behind many atrocities - but I will always point out where someone says X means Y when it clearly doesn't - that's how misunderstandings are propagated.

Religion is a force for good but I'd say mainly at the grass roots. All the nuns, priests,

elders, members of churches, who are right out there in the community 24 hrs doing

nothing but good for the troubled. A band of thousands who ask for nothing more than

to live by the golden rule and help others.

Are you saying charities will no longer exists without religion?

extremism and abuse of position can occur in any organisation irrespective of religion.

You need to look at the overall good. Ofcourse religion does some good, but it also does some bad. I'm more interested in the overall results. Sure nuns and priests and missionaries go to places around the world that most of us wouldn't dare to. However they're also there to prosthelytise and spread ignorance.

Non religious people and groups also do similar things but none of their donations go towards prothelytising so I don't see this as a clear win for religion??:|

I also like some feedback on how religion contributes to our understanding of the world i.e knowledge. Or how has it improved our everyday lives?

You're right, this would always be inherent in religion. Religion believes in absolute morality. That is so dangerous in reality.

Are you telling me you want to believe Religion is a force for good on faith because you don't think you can defend it?

I will say that I believe people might be more likely to learn charity/giving/social justice from their Church etc....... than if they are not part of one.

Yes you "believe." The mom who drowned her two kids "believed" God told her to do it.

You have to do better than that argument.

But let's look at it logically. Which is more admirable? Someone who wanted to help other humans and do good because they choose to do it and because they care about their fellow human being or someone that only do good or give to charity because they don't want to go to hell and thinks he/she is being watched?
