Should we be forced into having flu shots next? Remembering that flu has killed thousands. My daughters employer requires it (hospital)

Immunisation is one of those topics that stirs up a lot of debate.

Personally I am all for immunisation. My wife FIL and I all had booster shots when we found out our DIL was pregnant. That was a little over 5 year ago now.

I can't imagine working in a hospital and not having a flu shot. IMO that's just asking for trouble. Anyone working in the health system, should be vaccinated.

Whilst there seems to be an increase in some people NOT having their children vaccinated we are seeing increases in whooping cough, measles and alike.

Personal choice I know.

Is it ignorant to have your child immunised or is it ignorant not to have your child immunised.?

An unfortunate legacy of the British origins of European Australia is the preparedness to allow government to infringe on liberties to a degree that many Americans would not tolerate.

What a load of BS, Aussies have become conditioned of the years to believe what the government tells them to believe without thinking or questioning.

Its the same BS employers tell workers when trying to screw them over and most fall for it.

Oh you are the only one that has an issue working unpaid over time, all your work mates wont be be happy you are refusing when they have to do it.

Most have become weak followers and do as they are told without question.

The other part that I have seen changed is the willingness to become an informant for the system, everyone is so worried about what everyone else is doing they forget to watch what they themselves are doing.

Once it was a case of helping each other and doing what we could to help, now its more like its not my problem I'm fine Jack.

This is where the future is heading, anyone remember the scifi movie where the machines took over the world

Should robots be allowed to take a human life, without direct supervision or command?

Science fiction met reality at the United Nations in Geneva overnight, where this question was debated at a meeting of the Human Rights Council.

No I don't think it should be forced but I think a lot of companies do offer flu shots for the staff. Not just the medical profession.

I think I should start getting flu shots now. I am healthy but if my dad caught the flu it would kill him now. Luckily I know that he has already had his flu shot this year.

I think I should start getting flu shots now. I am healthy but if my dad caught the flu it would kill him now. Luckily I know that he has already had his flu shot this year.

We had them this year for the first time, I had just got out of hospital and serious antibiotics and OH is a high risk so thought it was time to take extra care this year.

I don't normally as I don't get colds or flue during winter, then come spring I get a bad cold.

Immunisation of children - Parents can apply to be exempted on religious, philosophical or medical grounds.

There is no suggestion of making flu shots compulsory for all. Why would they.. fit, healthy, young people don't need them.

People who work in hospitals are morelikely come into contact with flu germs than people who don't work in those sort of places.

The outbreak of infectious and life-threatening diseases is so undesirable that individuals should lose their autonomy.

This attitude is a dangerous one. It is patronising and assumes that government is right.

Immunisation is a desirable medical practice and most parents will have their young child immunised. But we should respect the rights of the minority who do not want to participate in this exercise.

Interesting way of viewing it.I think if children are going to be forced to immunize or be kept from child care, the next step is school? will they also face this? and if not, why not?

The logical next step is adults being forced to have boosters.... far more important ...to me.

why the push for children to be vaccinated knowing that the whooping cough vaccine in particular is not lasting and having little effect, yet no push for any boosters?

About 15 percent of the population get the flu each year and it can be life-threatening for older people and those with heart disease, lung disease and kidney disease, as well as pregnant women. "Those groups definitely should get vaccinated," Dr Hampson says. "While healthy people are unlikely to be hospitalised or die from influenza, they'll still probably have to take a week off work and feel really sick."

Tens of thousands where? in Australia, in the whole world?

Majority of deaths from flu are people who are over 65 years of age.

''with influenza, you either lived or were buried. So many of those who had "recovered" from polio were left with twisted backs, withered limbs, bodies that no longer could run and play.''

Children have boosters before attending school at age 5. The target group is for child care, usually from 6 weeks to 5 yrs. Not all children attend child care.

You’re most at risk of influenza when you’re very young or very old.

Young children and babies are most likely to be hospitalised and people over the age of 75 are most likely to die from influenza.

On average each year there are about 2,500 deaths from influenza in Australia, the large majority of them among the elderly.

Hardly likely to make it compulsory are they?

The annual flu vaccine is recommended for

anyone over the age of 65 or

Indigenous Australians over the age of 50

and anyone above the age of six months who has a chronic medical condition which may include disorders of the heart, lung, kidney, liver, diabetes, immunosuppression and steroid treatment. The list also includes pregnant women.
