My grandmother had hers surgically removed YEARS ago.

I know some people say you get them from high heels but my podiatrist says they are genetic. My mum has bad ones and wears pads on them, but doesn't wear high heels.

So far I don't seem to have any, and I love my high heels!!!!

Had them from my late teens to early twenties, after I started wearing heels, then they became too painful to wear any shoes at all and I was threatened with surgery. About that time, the Scholl wooden massage sandals came on the market, bought a pair and wore them everywhere but work, my toes straightened out and I haven't had a bunion in the 50 years since. Lived in heels until a few years ago, only gave them up due to arthritis in my knees, so would recommend anyone to try the wooden sandals before going down the surgery route.

My sister does, they are bad! She is booked in to have them removed and her doctor said do both feet at same time as it is a 6 week recovery time. Yes, genetic apparently but not helped by wearing the wrong shoes.

Now she can only wear sandal/thongs and soft sneaker type things. Losing weight has also relieved them a little.

My sister tried the orthotics, it made it a little better but she is vain..... and the shoes that fit orthotics are not her style.......

I have orthotics as I have arthritis in my feet, I also have issues with wearing broad ugly shoes, so summer is ok, sandals/scuffs work with them but winter, not so good.

I wear them at home and find I can go out with "nice" shoes for a few hours without pain.

I wear orthotics and if you choose carefully, you can get some lovely shoes that they fit in.

Miss Sixty (I think it might be made in Italy, not sure) leather boots fit them really well, as do a lot of shoes and boots I have bought in Italy.

If you are willing to pay, there are also some cute ones in Mountfords. Django and Juliette have some sweet shoes that fit orthotics, without looking fug!

Funnily enough, they fit well in Sketchers? Go figure that one out? And I have a high heel pair of boots....maybe Witner? (which I think is a pretty cheap brand?) that they fit in.

In general, if you are willing to pay a bit more (between $100 to $300) you can get some lovely leather shoes to fit your orthotics in. But under 100, I think you would struggle.

Also, my orthotics fit well in Big W brand sandshoes (Loafters?) they are about $6-$8 and you can get lots of cute patterns for summer. They don't last well, but for a few dollars who cares? I think you get your wear out of them.

ARA is another brand that fits them well and has stylish boots.

Google Dr. Scholl's original exercise sandALs, add wooden if you get too many results. I have read that the toe ridge is not as pronounced as it used to be, and it was gripping the toe ridge that helped straighten out toes, so I don't know if they are quite as effective as the originals were.
