We go 'inside the circle’ to see Circle Sentencing in action. Robert is an Aboriginal man who has been in trouble many times for domestic violence. Now he’s face-to-face with the victim and four Aboriginal Elders who are about to sentence him.

MEMBER for Lyne Rob Oakeshott – who is yet to decide whether he will stand at September’s Federal Election – crossed into his neighbouring electorate to sit in on a circle sentencing hearing at Macksville.

Mr Oakeshott was taking up an invitation by community representatives of the Gumbayngirr Nation, who were impressed by his support for the constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“It was my second opportunity to witness circle sentencing in action, and I remain impressed,” the Independent MP said.

“Impressed by the strength of the community elders, their knowledge of family history in and around a particular crime, and the example they provide to the victim and to the accused in how to do better.

The Kempsey magistrate opened up in an interview with The Argus last week on everything from juvenile crime to his own changing views on the legal system.
