yes he did, I thought I heard it wrong but no. No other PM has ever (to my knowledge) ever suggested that Australia start aggression towards any country let alone our closest neighbours. If this is his first day and he is so "gun ho" with his statements what can we expect next, very foolish and inflammatory Mr Rudd.

Well, the only way to send the boats back would be for our navy to escort them into Indonesia's territorial waters, which would be an aggressive act and Indonesians would have perfect right to shoot at them. Encroaching on their sovereignty would certainly strain the relationship. And do not forget that population of Indonesia is some 250 millions. 🙂

Then the same goes both ways but people in Australia and hopefully our leaders have the good sense not to retaliate. Don't forget Indonesia relies very heavily on our tourism and aid which is quite substantial. They want our help but also want to dictate what happens with the boat problem.

unfortunately the Indonesian government and their people don't think like we do, have no sense of diplomacy and would probably not consider the aid Australia gives every year. Maybe stop aid to Indonesia and see what happens.

Indonesia does consider the aid they get from Australia. You don't bite the hand that feeds you.

That is one reason why Aust gives them so much aid... better to have a friendly relationship with them, than they become an enemy (especially a country located very close to Australia).
