Uniforms for NSW workers

The NSW tax payers have just paid out $6.6m to rigout our railway workers and others, the cost to dispose of the old uniforms is $300.000. Design costs were $8500.00 and they will last about 18 months.

The employees who have been given these uniforms for FREE are whinging about the feel of the material.

My message - get over it , if you don't want to wear what is supplied FREE then you have 2 options, supply your own or get another job, sheeeesh what do people want ?

City rail employees have to wear the uniforms. If they think, for example, the male shirt, like a footy shirt (lycra and clingy) would be hot, sweaty and uncomfortable in summer then it probably will be. Some staff testing the shirts have developed a rash.

Not an option for them to supply their own.

If they think it is hot and clingy - lose some weight and buy some calamine lotion.

Just appreciate you have been given a uniform, some people don't even have enough money to buy any clothes, whingers.

Women wear pants and skirts, while male rail employees are no longer allowed to wear shorts.

They don't look very nice and they are being forced to wear trousers in Summer. They currently have a choice to wear trousers or shorts.

I would not wear a polyester shirt/blouse in the summer. I don't expect anyone else to either.

The staff are outside most of the time.

They had a uniform, it has been changed for the worse. Not their choice to change it.

It's cheaper to supply them with King Gee or Hard Yakka clothing whether they complain about it or not.

If they say they don't want to wear anything that's made in Asia they'll be naked.

obviously you work for or have family that work for the NSW rail.

I stand by my opinion, appreciate what is given you or take the other option, there are plenty of people out there looking for work who would appreciate the job and gladly wear was is supplied, they are whinging about very little but then some people just have to whinge about something.

No, I do not know any one that works for Sydney Transport. I have read widely about this topic, not just your opening post.

Wearing clingy polyester shirts outside in the summer is something well worth complaining about.

Also removing the option for males to wear shorts (females can wear pants or skirts).

I can't see any reason why they cant continue to wear shorts.

Being free isn't the point, the last uniform design was also free, it is the fact that it has been changed and not for the better of the staff.

Of course being FREE or supplied is a point, ask any of the railway union members to buy their own uniforms, if they had to there would be a massive strike.

I am sure the railway union representatives would have had some input into the new design of the uniforms.

Lots of uniforms are free for the workers so I don't see why you are having a go at these ones. Other than the fact that they are being complained about by the staff.

I have friends and family who work in Cityrail, Countrylink and the Ferries. I did know someone who worked on the buses but they have now left there.

They should not have changed the uniforms. From what I gather, the trousers being supplied are for use in Summer and Winter so they are either going to roast for part of the year or freeze for part of the year.

My sons uniforms are 'free' and supplied for them and they are in non government jobs.

Not everyone works behind a desk.

NSW Trains Uniform Feedback

Consultation was held on the 28th May 2013 for the New NSW Trains Uniform for NSW Trains, Stations, Travel Centres and On-Board Passenger Services Staff.
Unfortunately the Minister for Transport and her Advisors had already decided on the design and colour of the uniform before there was any consultation with the staff who had to wear the uniform.

The delegates and selected staff who attended the consultation meeting would be part of the trial and would provide feedback at the next meeting which will be held on the 26th June 2013.

There has been no consultation with Train Crew yet on the new uniform and our understanding is that Guards and Drivers will be expected to wear the same uniform as other NSW Trains staff.

Feedback given was the polyester shirts gave some staff rashes/allergies. It is not even summer (high temps) yet.

IMO the point is the staff have no options but to wear these uniforms.. doesn't matter whether the staff have to pay for them or they are provided free.. either way.. they don't consider parts of the new uniforms are suitable.

So if they don't want FREE uniforms leave and get another job, they have that option if they don't like the clothes supplied.

There is no reason to leave a job just because your employer forces you to wear a uniform that is not suited to the work/conditions you have.

If all the workers did quit over this -- how would Sydneysiders get around?

If new workers were employed to replace all those that quit, they too may have the same problem with the shirts and quit...
