Australia's Unemployment Rate Rises To 5.7 Per Cent In June

AUSTRALIA's unemployment rate rose to 5.7 per cent in June, the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced today.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate jumped 0.2 percentage points, as 23,700 Australians joined the dole queue.

The number of Australians employed increased by 10,300 to 11.6 million in June, fuelled by part-time jobs which grew by 14,800 to 3.5 million last month.

But the number of full-time jobs fell by 4,400 to 8.1 million.

Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Peter Anderson said bosses were cutting back workers' hours to avoid retrenchments.

"Many staff working part-time or casual hours want more work to supplement their income but the patchiness of the Australian economy is making that a very difficult ask,'' he said.

The latest jobs data follows an ABS report showing that real unemployment is double the official figure - with 13 per cent of Australia's workforce wanting a job or longer hours.

The ABS counts people as employed even if they only work an hour a week.

If our economy is the envy of the world, I'd hate to see what the rest of the world's looks like.

Much of (edited to add that) The rest of the world has double digit unemployment .. Many European countries have higher than 25% out of work. We're very lucky here in Australia.

It's realistically 1.2% unemployed, because 4.5% is considered full employment. CS provides examples of why that is lol

and if these people that now dont work full time hours were added to the list the percentage would be very much higher, then consider the number of people that have to work mulipule part time jobe to exist that are also a static on the very much fudged unemployment list.

No it's not spin.

If full employment was 0%, wages would skyrocket because there wouldn't be enough applicants for jobs. Also, think how many people you see daily who might be seeking work (perhaps so they can claim benefits), but aren't actually employable... or aren't actually looking properly,

Unemployed young people: too many affected, too little support

In response to today's unemployment figures which show Youth unemployment at more than 4 times the national average, ACOSS has joined with the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition in calling on the Government to respond to the increase in unemployment among young people by increasing Youth Allowance for single independent young people by $50 per week, along with the Newstart Allowance payment for adults.

ACOSS Deputy CEO Dr Tessa Boyd-Caine said, ‘Today's release of the monthly ABS unemployment figures shows that young people are struggling to find work in a difficult jobs market and sinking into poverty as they rely on woefully low income support payments. The release of today's Productivity Commission working paper on deep and persistent disadvantage also highlights people with low educational attainment as a group particularly facing severe and persistent disadvantage.

‘Over the past 12 months there has been a 30% increase in recipients of the Youth Allowance payment. The inadequacy of these payments has been recognised by the Henry tax panel, the business community, trade unions and many economists,' said Dr Boyd-Caine.

‘Young unemployed people living independently of their parents are expected to live on $29 per day. This is even lower than the already inadequate Newstart Allowance, yet independent young people are expected to pay exactly the same amount for rent, food and other basic needs,' said AYAC Acting Executive Director, Reynato Reodica.

‘We are equally concerned about the lack of adequate services to support young people to train and look for work', Dr Boyd-Caine continued. ‘We need better career counselling available for all young people who leave school without Year 12 qualifications and those at risk of dropping out of school, along with more investment in Job Services Australia services for people who are unemployed long term.

‘ACOSS and AYAC renew our call on the Government, and whichever parties form the next Government, to raise both NSA and YA for independent young people, single adults and sole parents by $50 per week to lift people out of the deepest poverty.

‘We are also concerned that if the Coalition's proposal of an American-style approach were implemented, with a 6-month time limit on payments for young people in some regions, many could be left without any support at all', Dr Boyd-Caine said. ‘ACOSS supports strong job search requirements, but even when these are in place some people will always fall through the cracks in the jobs market. Many young people are trapped in a vicious cycle of lack of education, lack of work experience and employer's reluctance to give them a chance. These figures show that current employment and training programs are not meeting their needs. It is important to clarify exactly who would be affected by such proposals and whether there would be a safety net for those who reach the 6-month limit.

‘ACOSS and AYAC are calling on both the Government and the Opposition to close the gaps in employment and training services which include lack of career counselling opportunities and targeted employment and training initiatives for disadvantaged young people,' said Dr Boyd-Caine.

Underemployment rate today was announced at 13%....

that was announced because the government was saying things were ok yet people were saying things are not ok so Roy Morgan looked into the real figures that matter to everyday people...

BUT... remember that for the past 6 years we have had our Government of the day tell us how good things are and that Abbott was scare mongering.... turns out that Abbott was completely correct and that things are not that positive after all.

Funny I have been saying the same thing over that period and that one day we will fall in a big hole caused by spending money we dont have trying to prop up our economy.

Now as the rest of the world slowly recovers and moves forward we are going down under our debt.

I hope everyone has had fun because the good times are over and now its time to repay the debts

Call me a cynic, but I do have to shake my head at the naiveté of apologists on both sides of politics who believe that, in the face of a global recession, anything done or not done by the government of a minnow country like Australia is going to have a significant effect on our economy.
Stimulation packages and public works projects may ease the pain in the short term, but the main reason we survived the GFC virtually unscathed was a resources boom driven by an expanding Chinese economy. Now the inevitable has happened and while we will probably be spared the nightmare of, for example, the Greek or Spanish economies, there is no doubt we are going to have to do some serious belt tightening; and there is virtually NOTHING any government - be it Labor or Coalition can do to avoid that.
