Melbourne sewerage question

I had someone tell me today that they remember, in about 1965, the night soil man coming around in inner city Melbourne. Really? I thought they would have been gone by then?

She also mentioned bread and milk deliveries by horse and cart. I'm finding this very hard to believe (being the same age as her).

I think she is pulling my leg. Is she?

I spent my school years in a Melb suburb and in the 60's and early 70's we had a Milk Cart, pulled by a horse, that delivered to us..
I loved the comforting sound of the 'clip clop ' coming up the street

We also knew we had had a REAL night on the Town when we passed the Milkcart on the way home lol

no, thats true . my parents bought a house in the leafy suburbs and had to have it connected to the pipe .. they were from adelaide and were quite surprised my mother says (i had this conversation with her only a few months ago)

and the milky did still use a horse , depending on the area. i remember it .. and the Tip Top bread Van that went street to street.

We arrived here in 1964 and had the man come to empty the bucket at my aunts house in Springvale 😞 The following year mum and dad had built a house in Knoxfield with an inside septic toilet....luxury!

On a brighter note loved the milk being delivered by horse and cart right up until the early 70's

Parts of North Sydney were slow to have sewer as well but I have heard that was because of the sandstone. We had a 'thunderbox' until the mid 70s.

For your question though, this is from a site about Melbourne sewerage: " For example, the removal of the last three pan closet toilets in Frankston occurred in April 1991 and was hailed as 'a small milestone' in the city's history."

I cannot remember, in my lifetime, not having a flush toilet. Or having to go to the shop to get groceries.

Hubby in the bush in the 50s had septic. He can't believe how backward we were in the city.

I also remember the Box Hill dairy very close to where Shoppingtown is locate now.Top end of Tram Road..memories

We were in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago, staying on Elizabeth Street and there were still horse drawn vehicles around.

drat its probably a good thing i got it wrong anyway.. i did have second thoughts about it afterward.

I remember the "dunny man" collecting the toilet pan. I was sitting on it once when it was suddenly pulled out from the back. Ewww! (I was probably about 6 years old).

But the clip clop of the milkman's horse in the wee hours of the morning I remember up to my early teens. I loved laying there in bed listening to the sound of the horses hooves.
