car people ???

Hi, who knows about swapping engines in a car these days? It's been a long time since I did it and I know the rules would have changed a lot since those days.

eg Holden Statesman with a V6 - can you put an V8 in? If so, does it have to be from the same year model or can you put a later model engine in?

im a car person

yeah you can, this model came out with a V8 so i dont see any real problems other then to fit the right tranny and rear end to handle the extra torque

and i'd choose a V8 chev engine that came out with this model... to make matters easier and would give it an orginal feel

(might work out cheaper if you bought a donor car

which model? I have bid on 2 or 3. But the one I am considering is a VR - the motor won't start - it may be just a fuel pump or it could be something major, but if I buy it I'm not going to cry if the motor is cactus - it's cheap.

all statesmans had the option of a V8, didn't they?

I have bid on 2 or 3. But the one I am considering is a VR - the motor won't start - it may be just a fuel pump or it could be something major, but if I buy it I'm not going to cry if the motor is cactus - it's cheap.

if you havent got a statesman car at all, why not choose a statesman that came out with a V8? should workout cheaper than to modify

why didn't I think of that? No, I did actually, but I can't find one under 8 or 9k. Actually I missed one that went for just over 6 a few days ago - could have kicked myself - it was a caprice with 5.7, leather and all the bits.

What I'm thinking is that the motor / gearbox /diff will probably be catus anyway and I'll have to buy a new one, so I may as well get one that's cheap.

Same thought briefly crossed my mind last night. 5 litre Fairlane complete donor, 650 bucks, everything needed to convert the existing Falcon, same year, everything. Soon got over it once I started recalling all the little details that go along with the basic swapping.

If you are putting a later model engine into an earlier model car you need to comply with the requirements and fit the later models

pollution control gear

Examples of minor (owner certified) modifications are:

Engine changes where the capacity increase is less than 15% above the maximum size engine available for the vehicle (providing no major structural modifications are necessary and where noise and/or exhaust emission ADRs apply, all standard equipment such as carburettors, exhaust systems, exhaust gas recirculating valves, oxygen sensors and catalytic convertors relating to noise and emission control are retained and operate correctly)

Emission standards for replacement engines

1972 and later model vehicles with substitute engines must meet the intent of the later of the Australian

Design Rules applicable to either: a) The original vehicle; or b) The substitute engine.

To ensure continued compliance with emission standards, any replacement engine should come from a vehicle which is subject to the same or more stringent emission control requirements.

An alternative is for an earlier engine to be upgraded during reconditioning to more recent engine specifications.

All anti-pollution devices should be fitted and functional.

Vehicles manufactured prior to noise and/or exhaust emissions related ADRs must meet certain minimum noise and emission requirements if the engine modification is to such an extent as to require certification by an engineering signatory.

Engineering signatories will be able to give you more information about these requirements.

As an example in the Eh unbuild rebuild thread in the motors section the car is an EH that previously had a crate vp v6/auto

gearbox fitted to it in about 1998.

It was written off a few years ago and therefore needed to be reengineered to reregister the v6 in the EH to the current modified

vehicle regulations which required a chassis strengthening kit, changes to the brakes, extra engineers certificates for the frt

crossmember, rr gearbox mount, steering and brakes

Certification that was not required in the 1998 build and an extremely costly exercise

So the owner decided to fit a 202 black (VK?) 12 port smog pump engine with the HR disc front end and Toyota celica manual

gearbox.

The disc HR front end is bolt into an EH with the engine mount movement to EH position and outrigger replacement considered

a small engineering change not requiring certification.

The rear mount will use the original celica gearbox mount with a plate fashioned to fit directly the original EH rear

gearbox crossmember and will also not require certification but will need to be done by a competent certified welder. The only

other change is a stiffening plate required for the centre tunnel cut for the manual gearstick also considered a minor alteration.

Because the EH is pre 1972 we will not be required to fit the smog pump or any of the black motor's pollution gear but will fit a

charcoal canister and a catalytic converter to the exhaust.

So the cheapest way IMO is to explore the limits of your state's vehicle modifications policies that do not require an engineers

certification and stay within them

OK, another question.

I have my eye on a car BUT the husband (owner of the car) is interstate. The wife is selling the car. Where do I stand if I buy it, do some work on it, and then the husband comes back and says he didn't want to sell it.

I have spoken to the husband, and he says it's OK, but I have no proof of that - ie nothing in writing. He says the wife will give me a receipt but is that legally binding?

No, not registered. So, the husband (as the owner) has to fill in the rego transfer even though it's not actually registered - is that right? I mean they should have the rego papers asking them to renew??

No, only if it is registered I think. In which case, a receipt will be enough.
