Who watches 'Vikings'?

Thursday nights on SBS 1.

Starring Travis Fimmel (yummy yummy) and Gustaf Skarsgård (Alexander Skarsgård aka Eric Nothman from True Blood's brother)

Tonight is the 4th episode.

Brilliant show. You cant help but like the main characters but geez, you also see that they were a very blood thirsty, violent people

I knew Alexander Skarsgård had a brother in it and when i first watched it i though it had to be the main character.

I was shocked to find out his brother was the guy playing Floki.

I mean, he looks nothing like the hunky Alexander Skarsgård.

So have you seen the whole of Season 1 now Clair?

I started watching it, but lost patience - it just seemed to drag on too much an was very short on historical fact..

I did a huge amount of research into this period of history for my teenage novel, Truthseeker - and believe me, the facts are every bit as fascinating as the legends.

The Ragnar Lodbrok of the series is based on a legendary Viking who may well have been a real historical figure, though many of the stories about him including that concerning his death - he was allegedly thrown into a snakekepit by Aelle the King of Northumbria - are almost certainly just that (stories)

The nickname Lodbrok means hairy breeches and two of his sons were named Ivar the boneless and Sigurd snake-in-the-eye (the Vikings were very fond of nicknames - our bluetooth system is named after a Viking era Swedish king named Harald Bluetooth.)

Ivar and two more brothers, Halfdan and Ubbe are believed to have been the leaders of the great army that landed in England in 865 and ravaged the country over a period of five years, killing in a rather bloodthirsty manner both the king of Northumbria (who was indeed named Aelle), and also Edmund the king of East Anglia, (who was promptly turned into a saint for his pains.)

The Great Heathen Army, sailed not from Scandinavia but from Ireland where they alreadyy had a base on the Black Pool or Dubh Linn (Dublin) Two of Ivar's sons (Ragnar's grandsons) later became kings of Dublin and one of them, Sigfrid, was the character I chose as my teenage protagonist in Truthseeker.

its hard to effectively include the same level of detail she-ele. i tend to fill in the gaps in my own head, and i guess the visual spectacle helps to get a picture reasonably clearly even if it is sparse on detail. i tend to expect less from a tv series than a well researched book maybe

I didn't mean to come across as criticising it, LL - it just didn't do anything for me. Alsoit seemed to be shot through a very dark and gloomy filter that might have been very atmospheric, but made it difficult to see what was going on.

I guess I should give it another go when it comes back on - maybe I'll change my mind.

I have a feeling R.agnar may have been one of 'Black Foriegners Dubgaill (mainlyDanes) who fought a three day battle in their boats on Carlingford Lough against the' White Foriegners' Finngaill (mainly Norwegians) for control of Dublin.in ca 852

no, not at all. the details are fascinating. maybe the gloomy filter suits my demeanor . .it is the imagery that i enjoy mostly

The most unexpected thing I learned about them was that, though we tend to see them as something like bikies in medievel dress, in fact they had a moral compass and beliefs and values system so completely alien to our own that it's very hard to get your head around what really made them tick.
