Investigators are hoping that new information will help solve the mystery of what happened to Madeleine McCann.

The then- three-year-old British girl disappeared six years ago while vacationing with her family in Portugal.

Scotland Yard is planning to release a computerized sketch of a possible person of interest in the case.

Former prosecutor Wendy Murphy joined America’s News Headquarters to discuss the development.

"I’m not buying it. I think this is more PR than anything," Murphy said. "I think this is all related to a civil suit now underway in Portugal."

The McCanns sued the former police chief for defamation because he wrote a tell-all book.

Alisyn pointed out that the McCanns claim the Portuguese police never took the case seriously

I think she is a very cruel woman, she appears to have an agenda of her own, namely that the parents are responsible for the murder and disposal of their little girl's body.

I have no idea what I would do in their place but I would probably ignore Wendy.

oh yep.. they did a great job didn't they..... NOT

If they managed to catch someone or find the child then they would have done a good job... all good to point the finger at the parents but unless they lay charges then I say they are jsut covering up a botched job.

I was just thinking today how amazing her parents are.. they have never give up and they have fought to get a better investigation... I hope she is found alive and well.

You don't think that she could be looking at it from the viewpoint of a professional ?

I disagree with what you are implying that she is saying .

In her opinion there won't be any new evidence until the mother answers those unanswered questions which would I'd imagine have helped with the actual investigation if she had have done so at the time...with a top defence Lawyer at my side and my child missing I'd want to be helping the investigation rather than refusing to answer questions that may help the police find my daughter .

Yes, she says that as did the person being sued but is it the truth?

I was appalled to hear the mayor say he felt great empathy for the parents but was sad that his town has been so maligned over this.

Who cares about the town's reputation as opposed to the missing 3 year old?

the parents are not amazing, they left their children alone.

its all very well for them to point the finger at the police saying they didn't investigate properly - well they didn't parent properly.

there would have been nothing to investigate if they had been decent parents and not left their children alone.

i'm not convinced they had anything to do with the disappearance, but then i'm not convinced they didn't either.

Yeah but you'd think the kids were pretty safe after you'd put them to bed in a hotel room while you went to dine in same hotel restaurant!

We can all look at it from any point of view........ a professional may look at it any way they choose to but she was not there, was not involved.

The cadaver dogs made a botch of it, given the hire car was not hired until days later and the parents had no opportunity to do anything like that following the police involvement?

Well as far as I know Scotland yard have publicly said the parents did not do it in their opinion according to the evidence, now I will have to go and find where I read that for the people who need a cut and paste.

Wendy Murphy's McCann case blooper on national TV

The anti McCanns are jubilant because a US commentator and former prosecutor, Wendy Murphy said she wasn't buying Scotland Yard's "new suspect" in the case.

She gave as her reasons that the McCanns "hired a team of lawyers right away" and refused to answer questions "right away".

I am not sure where Ms Murphy has done her research into the case (perhaps she is getting muddled up with the Ramsey case), but these two claims are very demonstrably false.

There exists ON RECORD, both transcripts and police accounts of the numerous police interviews which the McCanns gave during the four long months following little Madeleine's disappearance (up to 13 hours at a time). They had lawyers present in none of them. In fact, as witnesses (which they were until September), under the law of the land, they had no option but to answer police questions! Portugal is nothing like the US!

The McCanns did consult lawyers because it was being reported in the press that they were going to be prosecuted for neglect. Surely it is common sense to consult a legal expert in such a situation? Surely as a lawyer, Ms Murphy would herself advise this? As it happened, they were not prosecuted because in Portugal, the offence of child neglect requires "intent to harm" and there was clearly none. These lawyers did however give them other, very valuable advice with regard to Madeleine - ie. that she should be made a ward of court. The McCanns took this wise advice in the best interests of their daughter.

With regard to hiring lawyers to defend them on involvement in Madeleine's disappearance, they did not do so until the point in the investigation where it became clear that they were being treated as suspects (i.e. September). Even then, they answered questions for 11 hours on the day before they were made arguidos. At this point, their lawyer advised both of them to answer no more questions - their right as arguidos but not previously when they were witnesses. In the event, Gerry McCann was so frustrated at the line of questioning, that he answered the questions anyway albeit against his lawyer's advice.

The McCann case has been fraught with bungled police work and appalling misinformation from the start. Tabloid myths fuelled a hate campaign against the couple, threatening the search for Madeleine and the safety of themselves and their other children. The case is only now getting on track. The very last thing it needs is for some TV personality to set it all back to square one.

Wendy Murphy should familiarise herself with the facts of the case (and not by reading Pat Brown's "ficitonalised scenarios") as well as the basics of Portuguese law before she opens her mouth again.

An "arguido" is someone who is treated by Portuguese police as more than a witness, but has not been arrested or charged.

I was responding to your post Iza, I wasn't implying anything, I don't believe Wendy is a credible person in this case. She was not part of either investigation.

The Portuguese Police no longer consider the McCanns as suspects.
The British Police do not consider the McCanns as suspects
One has to ask what evidence Wendy Murphy has that neither of these professional bodies is privy to that leads her to a different opinion
