Rusty 102-Year Old Ship Is A Floating Forest

This incredible 102-year-old floating forest is the result of 40 years of mangrove tree growth in Homebush Bay, Sydney. The SS Aryfield is an abandoned ship used in WWII that was left in the bay to deteriorate after the ship wrecking yard closed down. The massive ship’s rusty hull is now home to lush vegetation, including full-grown mangrove trees. What an incredible sight.

I think this is amazing! I had no idea this existed, and I drive by Homebush Bay quite often.

I was going to put it up on the rust thread but then I realised it has to be your own picture.

That is amazing. The rust photo thread doesn't close until Monday evening, you have still got time to rush out and take you own photo of the ship/forest.

Yes it's pretty amazing isn't it? Goes to show how nature quickly re-asserts itself over the creations of us puny humans.

I'm tempted to rustle up OH and go and have a look for myself later this afternoon, as Am suggested, but I don't think he'll be in in it. We have to have at least one day a week at home, so maybe next weekend.

Goes to show how little one knows about one's surrounds. Apparently there are 4 major wrecks there and lots of other small craft which had been abandoned after the wrecking yard had closed down there back in the 70s.

The whole Homebush Bay area is poisoned with industrial waste and heavy metals buried in the soil from industries there back in the day.

They've been trying to clean it up since the 80s but it'll never be pristine. The whole area is being "gentrified" now and the area is being sought after for residential development. That area of Parramatta River is quite lovely.

I hope future residents don't get any nasty surprises.

I had no idea it was there either and we visit the Olympic Park often as we live in the area. Used to drive to work down Bennelong Rd every day. I am surprised no one ever mentioned it. I wonder where you can see it from???

today is not a particularly good day to go, its already almost 30° and the bushfire smoke is still quite bad.
