No threads about Typhoon Haiyan?

Perhaps I've missed it.

But just in case I haven't, what horrific devastation our neighbours have suffered. Aside from the dead and missing, to see so many people homeless and without basics like water and edible food is heartbreaking.

News like this makes me so much more grateful for the safety a country like Australia offers.

No thread Martini so here is one. Oh, Donna started and donations one somewhere. We were discussing it on the RT thread this afternoon but it deserves it's own thread.

It is just horrifying what those poor people are going through. It has weakened some and Vietnam has done a massive evacuation of coastal areas so I hope they will not be too badly hit.

The enormity of it is hard to comprehend, hence no comment, I guess.

Why would people not comment because they can't comprehend the enormity of it?

We've commented on lots of trivial stuff today.

How is it that we can 'feel' the pain of an artist that nails his testicles to the floor in Russia but have no comment to make on horrendous news right on our door step?

Tre Harsh. Well, you can't exactly say you know how they feel because you've never been thru something like that. And if you do you'd just come across as pompous.

Unicef had a Childrens Appeal that I wanted to donate to but their website links haven't been operational. Not sure if it is because they have been inundated or if they just haven't had time to set it up yet.

Of course you wouldn't know how those in the Philipines would be feeling.

But we can empathise with them by imagining what it must be like to lose your family. Or to have your home/street/village wiped off the map. Or imagine how desperate you would be if your children are thirsty and hungry and there is nothing you can do to help them.

It's not pompous to visualise if it were you rather than someone else.

Because mere words can't cover the scope of horror and devastation.

I mean, what do you say? "Isn't that awful, that Typhoon in the Phillipines"?. Shocking? Terrible? Horrendous? Just don't quite hit the mark, do they?

So we tend to ignore the elephant in the loungeroom.

Comment on trivial things, they're easier to grasp.

Sorry Donna. I couldn't find your thread.

My favourite is Medicines sans frontieres but you do get an awful lot of email requests once you have done a donation online. Of course I also like World Vision, Red Cross and Oxfam.

It just stuns me when I look at the photos and there is just flattened houses/buildings/trees everywhere.. where would you start rebuliding all that?... worse of course is the many lives lost.. children swept away out of their parents arms etc.

Interesting to note that there are conflicting reports on the death toll from news media compared to official Philippine Govt. Perhaps the govt only uses confirmed numbers....makes sense. Media reports are talking 10,000 souls lost. Terrifying.

I guess it is the enormity of the disaster that left us all speechless. I am sure that there will be many more bodies under all that debris. It is such a poor country, with millions living in shanty towns where there just was no shelter, and even concrete building were washed off.

This will be a new wave of refugees wanting to come to Australia.
