For most of the last year our team has been investigating and documenting gross acts of environmental destruction in Indonesia’s last remaining forests. What these investigations reveal is a story of one massive, faceless company with links to illegal, and irresponsible behavior and the rapid disappearance of critically endangered animals such as the Sumatran Tiger.

But we all feature in this story. Because this company is laundering a product – palm oil from forest destruction – onto the global market and into our homes.

Household brands that source palm oil through Singapore-based palm oil trader Wilmar International, such as the makers of Oreo biscuits, Gillette shaving products and Clearasil, are effectively making consumers - that's you and me - unwitting accomplices in the destruction of Indonesia’s forests.

I think the worst thing about what is happening in Indonesia is that most of the logging is being done illegally through multinationals.

Our report “Licence to Kill” details these multiple cases of illegal and irresponsible behaviour. But of all the cases we’ve documented, the one that saddens me the most is the fate of a national park in Sumatra. A decade ago, a scientific survey found that Tesso Nilo was the most biodiversity rich spot on earth for plants. It is also considered a priority habitat for the protoection of the as few as 400 Sumatran tigers that remain.
But in the last decade, wholesale illegal destruction of Tesso Nilo - largely for palm oil - throws into doubt the future for any tigers that remain there

Since 2011, the forest complex has lost almost half of its remaining forest cover; in June 2013, only 39,000ha of natural forest remained – a mere quarter of the area of the forest complex.

We should still do the best we can to raise awareness of it and donate to those organisations whose ppl are prepared to put themselves at risk to expose such companies and their practices.

Yes Icy, unless people speak up or donate to an organisation who can speak for them, these practices will not stop.

There are worldwide organisations, and including voluntary groups in Indonesia.....who can only survive on donations - no matter how small.

If people care they have to take action and condemn the organisations which are behind this appalling cruelty

The wildlife and their habitations cannot survive on just private words of sympathy.

Some groups have been pushing to have labelling on products to show if palm oil is used in the manufacturing process.It's high time a law was passed.Most of those orphaned young oragutans in Borneo are due to the palm oil industry,and of coursr their habitat is being destroyed.
Lone Droscher Nielsen's Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation is buying up rainforest via donations to give these magnificent creatures a safe haven.Just thought I'd give this worthy charity a plug 🙂

The use of palm oil in products has doubled over the past decade.

The halal symbol on foods usually means that palm oil has been used. A staple of halal diet.

Palm oil is cheap to produce.....so the multi nationals get a much bigger return on their products.

I think it was Nestles (?) that started to use palm oil in their chocolate without mentioning it, just using the halal symbol..

There was quite an uproar because of the taste, not the environment.

Anyone remember that?

So do we lay down and die? Because it it's happening in Indonesia, it's going to happen to us as well. Do we get up on our Town Hall steps with big placards? Or will we be domplacently cooking our Christmas roasts in Palm Oil and buying our decorations "made in china" and trying not to think about it?
