Political correctness. It would be hard but they have to please everyone.

The worst thing ever was when so called Christian Christmas carols couldn't be sung at primary schools so as not to offend. I hope that they have got over that bump now.

And the sad thing was that it was so often all in the mind of few politically correct crackpots anyway. The non Christians who were supposedly going to be offended were never asked if they objected to carols and usually couldn't have cared less.

In Singapore they manage to celebrate Hindu, Muslim and Christian festivals without offednding anyone.

That's true She_el. The only other bad thing was when supposedly Michael Jackson bought the rights to Christmas carols and they couldn't be sung. I mean, seriously?

Americans have been using the greeting "Happy Holidays" for many years....long before it was anything to do with political correctness.

It starts in October and runs through to the New Year, incorporating all the holidays from Halloween to the New Year. It is just a generic greeting that does not offend any race or religion.

It works for them so why should we take offense at it....and ebay is an Americn company.

Agreed. But blow the political correctness and not wanting to offend non-Christian faiths etc....for goodness sakes!

CHRISTmas is celebrated by CHRISTians!!!

Each faith has its various special holidays-why not celebrate them all?!

Embrace the cultures and beliefs and celebrate ALL the holidays-year in year out, daily life here on EbayAustralia would be one big party and eeeeveryone loves a party

Respect should be shown where respect is warranted......plus this is ebay Australia we are discussing this on.

I actually find "Happy Holidays' quite offensive to be honest.....how would the patriots over in America like it if I used some term to sort of 'down grade' their celebratory day on July 4th?

What licence do Americans have to decide whether the terms 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy Christmas' are acceptable for us in Australia?

BUT the Americans have been using this form of greeting for so long that it pre-dates political correctness. It was not introduced to appease any one section of the population but it does acknowledge that different sections of the population celebrate different holidays. You are wishing your fellow countrymen happiness for the holidays that mean something to them even if your beliefs are different.

I just don't see what the big deal is...you can wish people anything you like but why get upset if an American uses a greeting that is perfectly acceptable in their country. To me it is more acceptable than perhaps wishing a Jewish person Merry Christmas.

If someone wishes me "happy holidays" I make a point of returning it with "merry christmas". For me, for almost the last 30 yrs or so, I have been at work every single christmas day, so no holiday for me.

I think the Americans have only been using this greeting since Sept 2001. it's not much use trying to limit the offence given to those of a certain religious persuasion when what they really find offensive is the very existence of any alternative religion.

I don't like it much but I don't have an issue with it.

A lot of my friends are non-Christian so Merry Christmas is making less and less sense.

I am not a christian but I do not feel offended by christmas celebrations.

if that minority (can we just call it muslims, cos that is what we are talking about aren't we?) feels offended, then that is because they are in a permanent state of feeling offended by us infidels mere existance.

can you imagine that in a muslim country they would stop the ashura fest or refrain from ramadan because christians feel offended by that?

if they don't like christmas celebrations they should have stayed in a muslim country, but moving into a western christian country and then whinge and complain about the christian customs is ridiculous.
