Nuclear War - Worst Case Scenario

A nuclear war between India and Pakistan would set off a global famine that could kill two billion people and effectively end human civilization, a study said Tuesday.

Even if limited in scope, a conflict with nuclear weapons would wreak havoc in the atmosphere and devastate crop yields, with the effects multiplied as global food markets went into turmoil, the report said.

The Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and Physicians for Social Responsibility released an initial peer-reviewed study in April 2012 that predicted a nuclear famine could kill more than a billion people.

Helfand said that the study looked at India and Pakistan due to the longstanding tensions between the nuclear-armed states, which have fought three full-fledged wars since independence and partition in 1947.

But Helfand said that the planet would expect a similar apocalyptic impact from any limited nuclear war. Modern nuclear weapons are far more powerful than the US bombs that killed more than 200,000 people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

"With a large war between the United States and Russia, we are talking about the possible -- not certain, but possible -- extinction of the human race.

But he (Ira Helfand) said, ultimately, the only answer was the abolition of nuclear weapons.

"This is a disaster so massive in scale that really no preparation is possible. We must prevent this," he said.

President Barack Obama pledged in 2009 to work toward abolition but said that the United States would keep nuclear weapons so long as others exist. Nine countries are believed to possess nuclear weapons, with Russia and the United States holding the vast majority.

Cripes when I think how close to Nuclear War Israel is with Iran and Russia. It makes our little squabbles over here in the Pacific Rim fade into insignificance.

Many loooong years ago when I was but a wee thing there used to be men in Sydney that went around with plackards saying

'Beware the end of the world is nigh'

Really, all things being equal and taking into account the power of the media, things haven't changed much have they.

That's true Darki, but with so many nations as in the OP, Pakistan and India, having nuclear weapons, and the situation between Iran and Israel, with Netanyahu threatening to "do what it takes" to stop Iran from enriching Uranium, it's a valid concern.

Actually what is interesting is that many thousands of years ago in the last ice age it is believe the human race was reduced to approximately 10,000 people...

Seems they have since made up for those losses.

Mind you icy the threat of war and nuclear weapons has been with us for a long time, and before that was the Atomic war and misiles tossed from Russia and the USA...

I believe it was due to a meteor hit.

Vanunu has been tortured and imprisoned by Israel (his own nation) for decades for alerting the world to the massive Israeli stockpile of nuclear weaponry

Israel's been instrumental in supplying volatile 3rd worlders with nuclear weapons - it's a major Israeli industry

Nuclear weapons are now in the hands of amost every tin-pot dictator and nation on the planet

It hasn't stopped people takiing cheap holidays to Bali, breeding children they can't support, taking out 4 years deferred payment with Harvey Norman or having breast and hair implants, beginning second-families in their 50s, etc.

At the same time, people would sigh in relief if the world went boom. They hoped the year 2000 would relieve them of having to live out the rest of their lives, same last Christmas when it was hoped the Mayan Calander prophesy would be fulfilled

Trouble with a Nuclear war is that it's a 'lose/lose' situation.

Everyone is dead and no one gains a thing...

But take heart, humans are like cockroaches... there will be some scattered around the globe that will survive to live and blow up the world again one day.
