GPS anti-speeding devices

Why wont the government mandate into law GPS anti-speeding devices for all vehicles?

Vehicles with such a device would not be able to speed. It would not allow the driver to exceed the speed limit.

ROAD SAFETY CAMERAS would not need to photograph cars and the speed camera office would not need to process speeding infringements.

Police could then concentrate on thefts, fraud, violence etc...

More criminals could be locked up as more effort is put into this.

Instead put CCTV on every major road and install a quadrillion gig HDD which could be accessed by police.

What do you think? Could this work?

What Kelso said.

The govt depends upon us speeding as an essential part of its' revenue.

Allow cars on the road which can reach 200 km per hour and then fine us for using them.

If the govt really wanted to do something to make the roads safer then it would introduce a law which said that all newly manufacured cars must have a mobile phone blocker installed, so that peeps can't phone or text while driving.

Oh, but sales would plummet. Anyone for an anthrax ripple?

Tonight saw a green P plater in a brand new Jeep texting whilst driving at about 80km in a 60 zone, a girl...swerving all over the road.

Still had a red ribbon stuck to the back.

Any limiter device would need to recognise road limits (as in spot the signs) and adjust regularly.

There was a system devised a few years ago by some Uni students, which could "read" road signs and limit speed...haven't heard of it hitting the market (no surprises there) but it is a technological possibility.

All of these things are a technological possibility, but because commercial interests are involved, they remain a practical improbability.

It was also quite expensive to implement the initial project...and it didn't do so well at night at that stage.

I think it could be dangerous having those in the car, the driver loses control then.

It's also dangerous to have drivers who exceed the speed limit or drivers who phone or text whilst driving.

Are these drivers in full control?

There are a few innovations in cars now, some old some new, where the driver's actions can be adjusted/overridden: the brakes, the headlights, the parking sensors, the collision sensors..."safety" drops in speed when the on-board computer believes there's a mechanical issue...now that's the one that terrifies me. Because that can be without warning.

it's a short step away from totally automatically controlled cars where the driver does nothing else but get into the car, key in the destination and press the start button.

it's not so much fun for the driver but it's maybe a whole lot safer.

Personal freedom over an obligation towards social responsibility? . . . what a hard choice.

One of the German car companies has managed that...not just parking without steering, but unassisted driving 🙂

but...I guess that's like taking the bus, your trip and safety are in the hands of another, whether it's the human bus driver, or the computer-controlled system in your "driverless" car.

Computers being so reliable. hmmm.

What if the system became corrupted? there would still need to be a manual override in case of faults.

Would that be better? I don't know...most humans might believe a drink or other relaxant is OK behind the wheel if they're not driving, but what if they needed to take over?

It's a tricky thing I think. Look at the problems with the VW safety system...driverless cars would need to be completely fool-proof.

I think that some people drive for other reasons than just for getting from A to B

For those people, totally automatic driving would have little appeal.

And for those unforseen "glitches" then the driver would need to be paying attention during their whole journey. And if a computer was driving their car then they probably woudn't be doing that cos they'd be texting or phoning or putting on their make up or doing some other trivial thing which distracts them from the task at hand.

exactly...which a few people like to do now, but it might increase if they felt even less responsibility

driverless cars would still be likely to improve safety for all...but yes, with a loss of the feel of driving a car for the fun of it

We are attatched to our cars for other reasons than jusr getting from A to B.

Total automation gives a lot but it takes a lot away for some people.

I think it might be a good thing to take away those folks who put low profile tyres on utility vehicles and on SUV's.

What are they thinking and why are they thinking it?

Let's just get a national slot-car grid where peeps can get in their car and get where they want to go.

Emotion and the macho thing is going to get in the way, as people struggle to find reasons why they have to surrender control of their **bleep** extensions. 😉

it's a **bleep** . . . it's a Latin name for a part of my body. Why censor it? Are we living in an age where authorities are looking over our shoulder all the time and censoring what we can say?

Drive your utility vehicle / SUV V8, low-profile-tyred cars on public roads at ridiculous speeds to the detriment of old people, children and small animals, but don't allow me to name a part of my body from which I derive much enjoyment?

I think you might find that's been taken care of, too, commercially...for much of human history...

so back to topic...yes, if you have limits (which our roads do), ways to impose the limit should be investigated to see if it's safer to take speed control away from the driver. When it's excessive speed.

Got it nailed. The reason we have many artificially low speed limits on some roads and areas.
