Woman Receives 'Poo Cake' At Engagement Party

A New Zealand woman has received a poo shaped cake with the message "eat s—t" at her engagement party after a disagreement with the cake maker.

Micaela Harris already had a cake for her December engagement party but said her sister was nice enough to organise a second one.

But things didn't quite go to plan for Micaela's sister, who ended up getting into a disagreement with Emma McDonald, the owner of Oh Cakes.

In retaliation, McDonald decided to give the soon-to-be bride a special cake and a piece of her mind.

Underneath what Harris recalled was "magnificent wrapping" sat a turd shaped cake with a flag sticking out of it that read "eat s—t".

The cake was opened in front of more than 100 guests who couldn't believe what they saw.

"It was a weird situation," Harris told Stuff.co.nz, "at the time my sister didn't even know what was going on."

But Harris would not let the cake destroy her party.

"I think it [the disagreement] was taken too far. As a business owner you come across customers you don't like but you have got to take the highs and the lows, got to suck it up."

Oddly enough, cake maker McDonald seems to be relishing in her newfound fame, posting media coverage of her poo cake on her Facebook page.

"Nothing really negative that I've seen apart from a few who didn't read and understand it properly. Seems to be popping up everywhere . . . business opportunities have been thrown my way as well."

Oddly it doesn't surprise me the the cake maker has had new business enquiries.

A Southland cake maker has come under fire on Facebook after she set out to teach a client a lesson by sending her a cake in the shape of a giant poo with a sign saying "eat s..t".

Oh Cakes owner Emma McDonald, of Riverton, sent the cake to the client on December 20 after she said on Facebook the client had got angry at her about rescheduling a meeting.

She refused to speak about the incident with The Southland Times.

McDonald said on her Facebook page that the client had won a $50 voucher for a cake, which was then reduced to $30 by McDonald because the client owed her $20 for a separate business arrangement

When McDonald asked her, via text, what sort of cake she wanted, the client said her girls "like choc cake".

After the cake was picked up by a client who was attending an engagement party, McDonald said on her Facebook page:

"Your [sic] left with a $30 voucher and you want a cake still?? ok cool- give me some ideas?? oh wait you have none apart from wanting chocolate, I have a brilliant idea for your cake!!!- so here it is, your turd cake! Hope you learn your lesson."

People expressed their disappointment on her business Facebook page after the incident, but McDonald has hidden the comments since being contacted by The Southland Times.

When an argument among several Facebook users broke out on a post about the "turd cake", McDonald posted her private correspondence with her client on her Oh Cakes Facebook page, making it possible for all Facebook users to read.

McDonald said on her personal page just hours after being contacted by The Southland Times that "basically she [client] deserved what she got".

In the same post she went on to say that she has given food and cakes away to people in need and donated clothing to charities.

"I give one lady a piece of my mind and everyone thinks we are bad people. Well I don't think we are."

The client was unable to be reached for comment.But in a text from the cake client to McDonald posted on Facebook, she said: "We r [sic] just at my sister's engagement and got your cake, we and every1 [sic] else is absolutely disgusted."

The Chamber of Commerce president Sean Woodward said the situation was not a responsible way for a Southland business to act. "Southland is a relationship-based place. I don't condone it at all."

Woodward said there were plenty of avenues for Southland businesses to take if they encountered problems with customers, including contacting the chamber for advice.

"This time of year, people get a bit stressed."

That occurred to me too. I wouldn't be surprised if she does get more business - for the creative design of the cake as well as being prepared to do an edgy design (those genitalia type cake makers do a bomb for hen/engagement parties etc), and for having the oomph to let rip at a difficult client. After all, who amongst us hasn't wanted to stick it to somebody occassionally.

from what i gather from her FB, she didn't know it was for an engagement party and its her hobby, not a business.

If she is selling cakes for money, then it is a business transaction,even if it is on a hobby scale.

Not necessarily, however, I am only familiar with what constitutes a business vs a hobby, in Australia.

My neighbour can accept payment for altering my dress without it being considered a 'business transaction' for Australian Tax purposes.

Anyway, I don't really want to get into that. I was only commenting on what was posted on her FB page.

The hobby vs business rule is for tax purposes. It doesn't really have anything to do with a customer paying a cake maker (hobbyist or business) to make a cake for them. The customer would expect a suitable cake not an awful one made out of spite by the cake maker.

Not necessarily. The person who paid for the cake, could not make a complaint to Consumer Affairs. Why? Because it was a private, not a business transaction. (Assuming of course, the person who made the cake, does it as a hobby)

From my reading of the articles, nobody paid for the poo cake - the cake maker GAVE it to them, thereby nullifying the argument.

Thank goodness this thread is pic free now.

Doesn't it say the woman complaining won a $50 cake voucher. She already owed the cake maker $20 so the cake maker deducted that and $30 was the balance for the poo cake.

So she didn't pay in cash, but she had a voucher to the value of $50

Sounds like she had dealings with/ or knew the cake maker previously, if she owed her $20 from their last dealing with each other. Could be a bit of **bleep** for tat going on there.
