I enjoy Call the Midwife.I"m looking forward to watching it tonight.

I had started reading the book (I got the full set for Christmas) a while back (i didn't finish it at the time) and have only just started reading it again now.

Did you know that the Young boy who was Chummy's protector and helped her to learn to ride a bike later became Princess Di's bodyguard ?

Brighton, The book from which the series is based on (there are actually 4 books in the whole series .Call The Midwife is the first ) are written by Jennifer Worth (Nurse Jenni) .

Jennifer Worth took up the challenge and per pen in response to an article published in 1998 , In the Midwives Journal...which concluded that midwives (such an important profession) are virtually non-existant in literature.

I am enjoying the book so far.

I think the new series will be shown in England 2014,so I think we will be waiting awhile before it gets here worse luck:-(

Wasn`t last nights episode a tear jerker in parts..definately leaves a good feeling after watching it:-)Happy to say I was wrong it`s again on next Sunday night!!

At the trial of the elderly Nun the Judge needed a translator.Luckily the Court usher knew the lingo.

at other times in the book the Costas speak to each other in a different way...the words used seem to be backwards ...ie; wen dal = new lad

Just guessing though.

Iza maybe they used the backward words as well, though I hadn't heard of them.

My mother's family came from that area, Poplar, so it's quite interesting

for me to see as I hadn't been there. I knew it was poor though.

jackdaw =jaw. may also mean a thief

oliver twist = p*ssed, as in drunk

'amstead 'eafs = teeth (Hampstead Heath)

earwigged = eavesdropped

blackbird = brush (more specifically shoe brush - from blackbird and thrush)

grasshoppers = coppers, (police)

ve garden gate = magistrate

barnaby rudge = judge

And did you know the expression 'berk' as in 'he's a right berk' actually comes from the rhyming slang Berkshire hunt - go figure.

Brighton, yes that is the cockney rhyming slang .The Costermonger used it in the Court room.Perhaps the backwards talk they used between themselves helped them to communicate without 'outsiders' understanding what they were saying ?

bread n cheeses ...used to refer to hankies ...(cheeses / sneezes , maybe bread / head ?)

adam and eve is as She El said 'believe'

I'd expect that you would do well She El and you did.

I think in the book they used Oliver Twist for' fist' as it relates to the man's carvin knife having a Oliver Twist on her like something or other and he didn't want his 'amstead 'eafs knocked out of his jackdaw.

and from memory blackbird was used to refer to the Nun

Right Berks? I wonder what those Berkshire Hunters were like

I haven't watched last nights episode yet. Not sure about another series .I believe that the College( which is grade 2 listed) they use as the set for 'Nonnatus House' may have been up for sale earlier this year and that a new set needed to be found .

I enjoy the series ..though having read the books ...the differences are a little frustrating at times .
