Yes, my cousins wife she is a Vietnamese Refugee but has spent the majority of her life in Australia, she's lovely and as are her family.

My good mates girlfriend worked with them and helpedto get them settled into our way of life. She would occasionally bring them into my work for a quick chat.
They all seemed nice.

yes. and they gave me kudo's .

my son made friends with a Sudanese boy, and when i visited the house there was a fridge and a washing machine still in the packaging. they didn't seem to know what they were (it was 2007) I was brought in and sat down with the father, and his wife wheeled in a trolley with tea, coffee coke and a few other drinks (i had the tea) it was rather formal, but they were nice people. a few weeks later the boy came to my sons birthday with a toy , a roll of giftwrapping paper and a card and envelope. i assume the parents had been advised what to take to a 'australian party' but nobody had told them to wrap the gift or write in the card.

my mother is a refugee (we're friends, most of the time)

at one stage, most of my friends were refugees. they were the only ones i knew here in Australia. we attended ESL classes together.

A couple of my work colleagues, who later became my friends, were also refugees.

I assume most have met a refugee without realising it. how do you tell?

: Have you met any Refugee's.. yes, most of us would have, I think, as meep mentioned. Refugee's have been arriving in Australia for decades.. Czechoslovakia (as it was called then) Bosnia and so on.

People you work with, people you study with.. yes, you become friends with them, just like you would become friends with anyone that is a non refugee.

I'm sorry Margo but I find that question strange, funny even. Refugees are are normal people, just from different countries.

To me, its like asking, have you met somone from another planet and become friends with them. Now, that would be worth asking IMO.

Also you become friends with people that you have similar interests with, similar sense of humour etc.. not because they are refugees or non refugees.

I wondered the same thing, how would people know, especially if they didnt make friends with them?

I had to think about it for a while but then remembered a neighbor I have known nearly my whole life was a refugee from Hundary after the war.

I did once rent a house to a Sudanese family but I dont know how you'd know if they were refugees or not?

I may have met others, but I'm not sure, probably because I didnt make friends with them. Its not really the kind of thing you discover about someone until you are friends is it?

The man who used to own the shopping centre I worked at supposedly came here as a refugee after the war and made squillions of dollars....I met him but I didnt make friends with him....should I have?

Yes mugssy I have met and became friends with many of them, from all different backgrounds some came by plane some came by boat all great friends.

A lot of my friends were illegal when the Bosnian War was on they are legal now.

Some of them have returned home, but all had a need to leave their country during the war.

Guess I just can't understand why so many fight to not let them come here.

Maybe refugees' origins and past history has something to do with the caution expressed by many ?

Australia is filled with refugees and the vast majority are great citizens and neighbours. You rarely if ever see them in the headlines for violent or any crime. They have continued to live decent and worthwhile lives here in Oz as they did in their country of origin

Some refugees however are frequently in the headlines for violent and other crimes and demonstrate scant if any respect for Australian law, Australian culture, or the host population

We don't buy everything we see in the stores

We are entitled to be similarly selective when it comes to accepting refugees

I agree Margo, I think the intake number should be increased, but to what? Considering Australia resettles more refugees than most other countries (per capita) Why is three such a small number of countries participating in the resettlement program? From what I remember, the number is ridiculously low. Shame.

despite those from that place in the mid-east are the most racist of all groups and are constantly active in the genocide of the area's original inhabitants -- as well as refusing to accept anyone of colour, or of different religion, even to the point of refusing to accept blood donations from members of that same religion if the donor is coloured

What is Australia's current intake of refugee's It was 20 000? Is that going to be increased or decreased by Abbott?
