'Coward punch': Alleged Killer Refuses To Come Up From Cells

The self-proclaimed martial arts fighter and labourer did not appear in Central Local Court on Tuesday, when the charge was laid in the wake of the 18-year-old's death at St Vincent's Hospital on Saturday.

The 25-year-old is accused of felling Mr Christie with a single punch in an unprovoked attack at Kings Cross on New Year's Eve.

He has also been charged with assaulting four other young men, including Mr Christie's brother, Peter Christie.

Mr Christie's life support was turned off after he spent 11 days in a coma, with his devastated family describing him as a "beacon of morality".

Mr Christie was attacked in almost the same place where 18-year-old Thomas Kelly was fatally punched in July 2012.

According to facts previously tendered in court, McNeil had just left the Punchbowl bar in Kings Cross with his girlfriend about 9pm when he got into a verbal altercation with three young men.

He allegedly struck all three before attacking Mr Christie and his brother, Peter, when the other young men tried to hide behind them.

McNeil allegedly boasted that he was a mixed martial arts fighter before punching Mr Christie in the face as he shielded the others.

He also allegedly split Peter Christie's lip.

McNeil told police that the first group of young men was trying to sell him drugs and he had acted to protect his girlfriend.

He was unable to explain his actions towards the Christies, the facts said.

Hope they put him in with general population. He'll get more than his chance to beat up the real tough guys

Seems he didn't even have enough heart to appear in court. Why are they given a choice? He should have been dragged to court by the scruff of his filthy neck, for all to see

little kids should be given handsful of darts to toss at bullies' bums

then when convicted, they should be decapitated and their rotting skulls hung on lamp-posts all through the city as example to other goons who want to pull the same stunts

and the convict's family should be forced to sell their homes and anything else worth a cent with proceeds to go to victims' families

If I remember correctly, anyone who was proficient at martial arts were not allowed to fight "with a deadly weapon". Is this the reason that Police can charge him with murder? This current coward puncher bragged about his martial arts training.

Sensationalised headline? His choice under the law.

Self-proclaimed mixed martial arts fighter Shaun McNeil chose not to appear in court to face a charge of murder over the death of 18-year-old Daniel Christie in Kings Cross on New Year's Eve.

Mr McNeil opted to stay in the cells at Central Local Court on Tuesday. He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

He will reappear in court in March.

Yes.

After Daniel's death, Attorney-General Greg Smith asked the acting Director of Public Prosecutions to examine if murder charges were appropriate "in light of the evidence, and in light of the alleged offender's reported martial arts experience".

I don't see the problem with him not appearing. Either he realised he wouldn't get bail, or decided he didn't want it. His choice.

Probably because when you posted it when up to the top of the board, therefore more people are going to notice it.

I was taken by the title ' refuses to come up from cells' and opened it to see what that was all about. The thread/news story title reads as if the accused was required by law to attend court but refused to.. not true.

It's the cowardly lump of scum hiding out in the cells who's not feeling anywhere near as full of himself these days as he obviously did the night he went around punching people who were complete strangers to him and had no wish to even smell him, let alone allow him to take their life

you just keep fretting about a lump of spit sitting in the cells --- denied bail --- reviled by an entire nation -- and feeling all sorry for his **bleep** self because this time HE stands to feel the pain
