I was told the other day that we now have these "move on" laws for our city center. Apparently the police have been told to "move on" anyone who looks like they have no money - not the exact words but to that effect. Where is our society heading?

When you consider the system has already failed these people at some level and most likely in the mental health area its a disgusting way to treat our disadvantaged people that dont fit into neat little boxes.

Our social compass seems to have become corrupted from the top levels of government to the average person

The CFA and the police here in Melbourne have been telling people that dont have air conditioning to go to shopping malls etc for the day, that would include the homeless, people with disabilities, the needy etc............

So if the above say that is where to go, how come the shopping centre managements be so cruel?

Anyone can go sit in shopping centres I thought, there are seats...

Just now on facebook there was an add from Target, telling everyone that didnt have airconditoning to come and sit in their store..........didnt say anything about some couldnt go.

Westfield own most of the big shopping centres, it was probably them, who said certain people could go to shopping centres........their main aim would be to have paying customers, not people escaping the heat.

Facts are these are not public places, they are private places. privately owned businesses that have customers that help pay for the electricity to keep these places cool and as much as they might not like it the owner can move them on.

I suggest they try libraries and community centres, public pools (ususally only a few dollars to get in)

I have been homeless in my teens so no need to say I don't get what they are going through. I do get it... but they can't expect that the private businesses should look after them when it gets hot.

Article in the paper this morning says Aldi is funding a mobile

bathroom for the homeless to have a shower,brush teeth etc

without being harassed in public toilets. Funding is from sales

of bottled water.

One user was a 12 yo who ran away because of unwanted

attention from her sex worker mum. Good for Aldi, but I hope

something is being done for the 12 yo

Well, these places are where the CFA and the police have told people to go who dont have airconditioning............surely in our 44deg heat, places can make allowances, it is not like it happens week in week out........we have had 5 days of heat above 40, shopping centres seem to be the best places........

Funding comes from sales of Water Equals Life bottled water at Aldi

yes they are private businesses operating in a community and thats why I asked where is their community spirit and social conscience, they pull mega $$ from these centers and should put something back into the community where they operate.

Aldi seems to have found a conscience and I for one would go out of my way to support them if all other things were equal.

In these times when so many are doing it tough and the government is pulling funding these large companies need to do a little more

I know our local shopping centre is pretty lax when it comes to keeping those out that might be a bit rough... if they did stop them from coming in then half the town would not be able to shop in them... seriously thongs and singlet tops are all the go. The need to smell good is also crossed off the list...

I love my town but I wish they had a bit more of a desire to dress to go out.

We have a lot of homeless people around our local shopping strips who can't afford to dress suitably. They have to shop

I dont think that 12 year old would choose to live on the street, some have no choice at all.
