Any musicians here?

I will be teaching myself how to play the piano, on an old 49-key casio keyboard. It doesn't sound that good, so I might be buying a new one.

Would love to hear from people who can play music. 🙂

My hubby is a musician - singer/songwriter/guitarist - but he can't teach.

Have been complaining for 20 tears for him to teach the

grandkids. But he says he just doesn't know how!

Personally, I don't think he has the patience. But he covers

himself with "Those who do, can, and those who can't, teach"

Grandkids are now old enough to wish he had taught them

My nephew is a musician, songwriter, plays guitars andalso makes guitars.........he does alot of gigs in The Dandenong Ranges and other places...

I studied classical guitar for 12 years. My tip would be to get the the correct technique because if you don't it is going to make it difficult to play more difficult pieces as you go along.

My nephew is 4 months old. I hope to introduce him to art and music when he is 2 years old. 🙂

Donna, would love to hear you play. Good tip. My first steps are to get a metronome and learn how to read sheet music.

Just make sure the sheet music is for pianos.

I think if you want to seriously learn you will need more keys than that - a full keyboard usually has 88 keys so better to go for that or a little less won't matter. How will you teach yourself? With a book, or online?

I'm a pianist though haven't played for ages. Good for you though, learning a new instrument is very rewarding.

20 tears - that long??

and he's correct about 'those who can, do - those who can't, teach'.

I had two cousins - the younger of the two was by far the best musician, but he was hopeless at teaching - something to do with patience and expectations of students getting it as easily/quickly as he did. The other brother - not as good a musician but a good teacher because he understood that not everyone picks stuff up at the same speed - he had the patience to allow the student to take his time.

crikey, what instruments can you play?

brighton, I'll be learning from Youtube, mostly. There are plenty of videos for beginners. Any other theory or information that I need, I'll find online.

EDIT: I am thinking of getting the Casio LK-120, an affordable 120-key beginners keyboard.

I learned Piano and Violin throughout school. Picked up the alto sax when I was 13.

Learned quite a few from the same families including the trumpet and the Harp (school got donated a harp and needed someone to know how to play it LOL)since I've had kids as they're kinda band geeks and one of them is intent on learning every instrument to a grade 4 AMEB level, so I kinda got dragged along too, Whilst one of the Crikeys plays Cklassical and rythmic guitar, I never went there.

If you can play the piano, it's a pretty good starting point for just about any instrument as you can read both base and trebel.

Depending on your intentions I guess, I'd suggest buying a keyboard with weighted keys so that it imitates a piano. but that's just me. If you're not planning to take AMEB lessons and exams, then I guess there really is no need.

You cant really learn to play piano by playing on a keyboard, as for a start you will be missing the pedals and the number of keys are "wrong." I learnt to play organ when I was a teenager and played any type of organs including setting up and testing a couple of massive church organs, but I am not any good at playing a keyboard.

I am interested in playing popular songs(like PIano Man, by Billy Joel), to amuse myself and friends. So I think that initially, I can get away with a basic keyboard that does not have weighted keys or a sustain pedal. Once I know how to read sheet music and am able to play the fun songs, then I may progress to a better keyboards or a real piano, for more complicated music. 🙂
