They Held Daniel Christie's Funeral Today...

...at the Hillsong Church across the road.

I was expecting to see large crowds and traffic jams, but no such thing. There was a news van on the lawn at the front, is all I saw.

It must have been on the other side. That place is huge, and their carpark is immense.

They've even offered car parking to our staff while the roadworks are going on for the construction of the railway.

You had to apply in writing, tho.

It was good enough for the Governor General to go and there looks to have been a good turnout from what I have seen on the news just now.

Yes it must have been well organised, there was no crowding or traffic disruption of any kind.

I was a bit surprised that the Christies were Hillsong people, must admit.

There were approx 400 people at the funeral.

That venue (Hillsong Convention Centre) might have been chosen as it has a big capacity & good parking. Doesn't mean the parents are Hillsong members.

No you were assuming I thought the Christies were Hillsong members.

I though no such thing. I said I never thought they were Hillsong People, as in the sort of people who would have anything to do with the Hillsong Church

The Hills District in the Northwest of Sydney (comprised of Pennant Hills, Castle Hill, Winston Hills, Baulkham Hills etc. is considered the Bible Belt of Sydney. Many of the older residents there are devoutly Church of England (now Anglican) and Presbyterian followers

Those that I've met tended to view the evangelical Hillsong Church with a fair bit of suspicion. I assume the senior Christies would have done so also, which is why it surprised me that they would have given the organistion of Daniel's funeral over to them.

I surmised (as you'll see in my OP), the reason they would have done so because of the large gathering of mourners expected, also the presence of the GG and news crews would have demanded a large venue in keeping with the solemnity and sensitivity of the occasion.

It's possible the Hillsong Church offered their services, just as they offered our staff the use of their carpark during the construction works of the new NWRL.

They also came around with boxes and boxes cupcakes for our staff too. Obviously they're trying very hard to be accepted by the community.

Even though a funeral may be held at the Hillsong Convention Centre that doesn't mean the organisation of the funeral would be done by the Hillsong Church. The can hire/use the venue only. The organisation of the funeral would be done by the family and who they chose to lead the service.

I opened this thread initially as I thought it would be about offering sympathy to the family.

Icy, what's wrong with the Hillsong people? by the remarks on here it sounds like they are not acceptable. Do you know or is is that no matter how a congregation is percieved unless you are a member of that congrgation you wouldn't know.

Much sympathy to the family of the young man killed & thank you for posting so we can all express our sympathy towards the family.

Nah... there's nothing wrong with the Hillsong Church, Faun.

Simply that it's suspect of american-style of evangelism which doesn't go down well with dyed-in-the-wool traditional largely Anglican population that have settled the Hills District in the north-west of Sydney.

Which of course will gradually give way to the new settlers that worship at the Sikh Temple in Blacktown and the Mosque at Bankstown, so it's a moot point, really.

I guess it gets lumped in with Jehova's Witnesses and Scientologists and Latter-Day-Saints etc.

From what I've heard, it's viewed with a jaundiced eye because of it's strong business associations here, (Gloria Jeans etc) and the fact it is such a huge organisation with lots of business interests but enjoys the tax discounts of a religious institution.

He was a local to that Church. Grew up & schooled nearby.
Was speaking to a friend of our family who is the year below Daniel at school about attending the service, and ironically my sister was speaking to an old friend of the thug/killer at a baby shower yesterday who was somewhat defending his character- much to my sisters disgust!
