Boy Dead, Vic Police Shoot Father

Devastated friends have taken to social media to express their shock and sorrow after an 11-year-old boy was killed by his father at a cricket oval in Melbourne's southeast.

Luke Batty died from severe head injuries at the oval in Tyabb, near Hastings, after he was attacked following the local club's cricket training.

The year six Flinders Christian Community College pupil was treated at the scene but was unable to be revived.

The victim's 54-year-old father, from Chelsea Heights, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition, after police say he came at officers with a knife after they were called to the scene in Tyabb, near Hastings, about 6.30pm (AEDT).

Commander Doug Fryer would not confirm if the father inflicted the boy's "quite brutal" injuries or exactly how the boy died, insisting that it was a matter for the coroner.

"I confirm that the male shot by police is father of the child who is deceased and we're not looking for anyone else," he said during a media briefing at the scene last night.

"I can confirm that the young boy has died of significant injuries. I'm not going to go into the detail of how they occurred or what they were," Fryer said on Thursday morning.

The father died in hospital. Poor kid. What a horrible way to die. Other kids witnessed what happened. What a horrible thing to do; what a horrible thing to see.

How can a father do that to his own flesh and blood?

His poor mother, she saw it happen, all my thoughts and sympathy go to her.

The poor boy, he is now at peace.........this is just so very sad.

The father must have been in a rage similar to what you hear about "footy parents", is all I can think of. No details have emerged yet as one can understand.

It must have happened too quickly, or else someone might have intervened. A quick fatal blow, maybe.

From what I read, he beat him around the head with a cricket bat.

The boy was playing cricket at the time

I type too slowly or everyone else types too quickly. I cannot understand how it is that one parent can kill their own child or children to hurt the other parent. Selfish and cruel.

I read that is possibly was something like that as the parents were separated.......BUT, the father didnt have to do what he did.

It is really difficult to comprehend. It seems that in majority of such cases they plan on taking their own lives as well....

It doesn't work like that, Joe. Police shoot to stop the threat and they are trained to shoot at centre body mass.

in the report this morning they tried using pepper spray or something like that to immobilize him which was ineffective

but still, i was surprised to hear he was shot in the chest

i thought they are meant to immobilize, not kill
