Sea sickness tablets - over the counter?

I'm off on a cruise in 10 days time and someone suggested I buy some even though I have never been seasick before.

Is it something I can get over the counter or do I need to go to the trouble of a doctors appmt for a prescription?

I dont think they work. I have terrible motion sickness, I hate boats, and theyve never worked on me.
You get them over the counter at the chemist, I dont think theyll harm the kids, theyre mostly natural stuff, from memory. Youre better off with ginger tea. Apparently ginger is an anti-nausea. Not that that works for me either.

I reckon forget about it, go and have a good time.

BTW, I have to ask, did son go to Goodlife? Its been bugging me! LOL.

I don't get motion sickness, but I took some with me last cruise I went on, just in case.

acupuncture bands from the chemist work, drug free and reusable. For things such as motion sickness and morning sickness.

I do get sick sea, so have never been on a big cruise ship, but we have a local dolphin watch cruise, that I go on occasionally when friends visit and I take ginger tablets from the chemist a few hours before and when I board- they work and are natural so would be fine for children

It's been some years since I went on a cruise, but I have used tablets with good effect, and also "Scop patches" which from memory worked for a couple of days. No script needed.

Unsure if the patches are still available, this is going back many years now.

I usually just ask the chemist for seasick tabs, cant remember the name, I only take them the first day till I get used to the motion of the ship then I am fine.

Kwells....they have been around for years. I am 68 and my mother gave them to me, I gave them to my children and my daughter gave them to her girls. And no ill effects, except that my youngest daughter was very sleepy the first time she had them. After that we gave her a smaller dose (She was only a toddler at the time)

Phernegan is over the counter, is safe for children but it causes drowsiness.

There are others but IMO they are not as effective as ones that are prescription medicine.

My advice, speak to a Pharmacist first and then decide if you need to see a Dr.

You can also purchase Ginger Lollies at the supermarket to suck on. The flavour is quite nice.

Isn't Phernegan for allergies?

My mother buys something called "naked ginger" it can be found in the cake cooking section of the supermarket with all the other cooking fruits, nuts and flours.

It isn't a sugary type of ginger like a lot of the lollies and my mother swears by it (but I think she says she needs it because she just loves eating it.)

Travacalm comes in 3 variations. I found the work for me in general, although they didnt work for my son on our last long trip.

My sister in law takes Kwells and they work really well.

As Lyndel said they have been around for years I have them when I was younger and they always worked.

Phenergan is an antihistime. I got some last week for my g/daughter who is allergic to mosquito bites

Sorry about that kudo meep - i was bumped by an over enthusiastic dog when going for the reply button.

I just take some crystallized ginger along and nibble a little piece every time I feel nauseous - I suffered terribly with travel sickness when I was younger and find this works perfectly for me when cruising.... that and ginger mint mai tais!

The herbal travel sickness pills are mostly ginger.

You could try a non food/medical way of dealing with motion sickness.

The reason car drivers don't get car sick while their passengers do is because they have hold of the steering wheel to steady themselves when the car has too much movement.

So the best thing to cure car sickness is if the passengers have soemthing to hold onto.

The same with sea and air sickness is to have something infront of you to stop any swaying.

I saw this many, mnay years ago on a TV show so I don't really know how well it works and I can't imagine giving your passengers a fake steering wheel would be safe when the air bags inflate.

The only time I have tried this and it worked really well was on a long bus trip where I held onto the seat in front of me, normally I would feel quite ill doing the trip by bus.
