Mineral Turps and Metho

How do I get rid of these? I presume that I can't put them down the drain and I can't find any info on the local council website.

how much of it have you got?

i use that stuff for cleaning machanical bits and peices

you may need to consult your rubbish tip, there could be a charge if you want to dispose of it legally

alternatively you could advise it for free, i sure someone out there would take it off your hands and make use of it

Your local council should be able to help you. Our council has a special place for such things, as you cant throw them out willy nilly.

Our council has a website with details on how to dispose of most things. This is an example.

Rubbish bin - you can only put small amounts of household hazardous waste in your rubbish bin. Small amounts of liquid, such as paint, can be dried and solidified by adding a material to soak up the liquid such as kitty litter, soil or grass clippings. Alternatively, pour liquids onto newspaper and cover them with absorbent material. Empty paint tins with minimal paint residue can be recycled and placed in your recycled bin.

those stuft ain't cheap, anyone would want them for free.

If you're talking about used ones then I don't know.

Hi, first my apologies, my OH hadn't signed out and I wrongly posted on his ID.

We have just had a new kitchen put in and when I emptied the cupboards under the sink I found 2 full bottles of metho and one almost full one of turps. Shows my level of housekeeping, they must have been there for yonks!!!

I can't even remember buying them. But I think they are far too dangerous to have in the house.

I will take your advice and call the Waste Disposal Depot tomorrow and ask if I can soak them up with kitty litter and then put in the bin.

BTW ur OH is beating you by 1. Anyways, why would you throw good useful stuft out???? give it to a painter. Even better sell it to them. Or if you're in Melb. I'll take them off you for free.

I know Bob, he is a real stinker, we have been married almost 50 years and he has always been one step ahead. I can never seem to catch up.

Sorry bob I think a painter would laugh if you tried to sell it to them , I buy turps and thinners 200 lts at a time

You can use metho & water to clean windows.

Metho is not a problem to dispose it is a natural

spirit & will evaporate harmlessly if poured out in

the open.

Turps is a bit messy to dispose of as it is a light

oil but it can be used to treat any wood that is out

side in the weather.

50% turps 50% raw linseed oil is good for out door timber

Nothing dangerous about Metho if it is stored properly.

It is great for cleaning diamond jewellery....I let my jewellery stand for a few minutes then give it a once over with a soft toothbrush and it looks like new.

It is also great for cleaning windows and mirrors....cheap and effective.

Call the council, they should have either a collection of dangerous materials, or a depot.
