Why is it that people seem to be becoming more envious of others?

Such a dislike of others wealth. I can understand not liking a persons character if they are a braggart etc but to put people down becasue they have more than you is a waste of time and energy.

Thinking of how you would help this person, that group of people and use the money sooo much more wisely if YOU were wealthy. I seem to read/hear this envy more and more and I have to wonder why. jSurely part of becoming an adult is realising that life isn't fair....never has been and never will be so instead of stressing about how others use their wealth, be content with what you have, live your life to suit your circumstances, try to be a happy person and if you don't like your way of life, do something to change it.

not directed at anyone......just very much sick of the rubbish being heaped on anyone who is deemed "wealthy".

now I'm off to paint and be very happy that I can now afford to buy better quality paints eventhough I'm sure there are artists who can afford the VERY best paints made.

hahaa...NO icy, I'm definitely not wealthy, nowhere near it but I read and hear "rich people" bashing more and more it seems. I've never thought of Australians as being like that.....broad statement I know but I've alwasy thought we accept people for who they are not what they have/don't have.

Some rich people are ethical and some aren't just like poor people. If you are rich you can afford to be more ethical, does that make sense?

Being envious of others is a bit silly really. You don't know what cross they may have to bear in life. No one has it good ALL the time.

We are having a LOT of problems again with my middle sister and her jealousy issues!!

She always obsesses about what everyone else gets or has in the family yet forgets quickly the things she gets or is helped with (she is 36).

She makes a massive storm within the family and its always everyone elses problem never hers!! (She sees a shrink but honestly there has been little improvement!)

Plenty of people ridicule greedy gina but I don't think most envy her.

Most people like their families, share with them and enjoy them rather than go to war with them.

I don't think many would envy being hated by their own offspring.

Very true Katy and being happy starts within ourselves, money has little to do with it......although not having enough money can cause problems, it isn't the root cause of unhappiness.

I get what you mean donna but a persons charater usually stays the same with some changes from major events during their life.......rich or poor.

Disliking someone becasue they don't choose to be ethical or morally right in what they do or how they use their money is understandable but that's more the persons character. I don't understand the envy of "wealth".

What's an example? I can't think of anyone who has demonstrated envy of wealth.

I've seen people criticising wealthy people, like Gina for example, but who on this earth would be envious of people like her? The criticism is based on ethics and other personality faults, mainly.

On the other hand, I've seen people pretending to be wealthy, famous, simply fabulous and masterful...and bragging about it..,but the pretence is so obvious I think it's more likely a sign of desperation, not envy of what they clearly don't have.

freaki, I think a person like gina would be disliked rich or poor.....I think she is her own worst enemy.

That's sad Kylie, there must be issues for your sister that stem from childhood, I hope she can be helped but it must be very frustrating for the rest of your family and a bit stressful whenever family get together, wondering what if there will be a scene.

So where does this "information" come from, this "envy", was there an article in Womens Weekly or something?

and you may be right freaki and I've used the wrong word.....but envy is how I would describe what I've read. jealousy, as Kylie used......I guess it's the attitude of "what about me...it's not fair, why shouldn't I have that/do that" and just stupid remarks.

I do see some "would be if they could be" types on here......and yes, it's very obvious.

mmm, maybe flip the "envy" over, Why are the rich after our welfare safety net, our public health system, our penalty rates, our public schools, why do they want to lower wages, smash our Trade Unions, increase the pension age - Are they envious of what the worker's of this country contribute?

I have a socalled friend who says to those of us who worked hard to buy our houses or cars. All of us have worked at lower paid jobs. .

I don't think it's envy, Boris, so much as a perceived threat to their living standardss. The wealthier you are, the more it costs to maintain the lifestyle to which you've become accustomed.

Why do you need a particular example Karen, doesn't what I've posted explain what I mean?

I'm not about to hunt through different articles I've read ( and no, not the womens weekly), so maybe read some letters to the editor or newspaper articles and see if you get the same impression. You may interpret things differently but it's how I have felt about what I've been reading/hearing.

Maybe we read different media.

I figured you'd have an example before starting a thread about it.

Perhaps it's indicative of politics and their spin doctoring brainwashing, where their only focus is on money and economy. More people probably feel inferior if they don't meet the standards set by the spin.

When you stop to think about it, money isn't important...except having enough to pay essentials. Greed and materialism and insularity are the problems, IMO.

Okay, I've thought of one example Karen. A woman had her car scratched with a key or something similar, it was an expensive car think it was a mercedes, anyway a couple of the replies showed "envy" to me.

things like......well, she must be rich to have a car like that so what's the big deal, she can afford to fix it..

So yeah, lots of little things like that have stuck in my head and I seem to read them more and more.

and boris, I'm not going to discuss this with you as it's clear we have very different views and you are welcome to yours.
