Should taxpayers have to pay for politicians state funerals years after they have retired from office and they also collect a very generous taxpayer funded pension for life.

Generally I would say yes. Anyone that served as a respected leader should be given the recognition of a state funeral.

In the case of someone like Wran, he left behind some great legacies and continued to work for his state after he left politics.

we've spent a lot more on a couple of extremely priveliged young people from o'seas who have contributed 0 to australia's daily life apart from photo ops. priorities. wran possibly wouldn't have liked the idea himself however.

The state funeral offered to a Labor senator after he was accused and under police investigation for paedophilia comes to mind that this "offer" to former politicians, who are generously compensated for their job, get mega superannuation pensions for life just because they held a political position should be abolished.

Thankfully his family declined the offer but it it should never have been offered in the 1st place.

I see no reason for a state funeral for politicians or public servants.

Politiciians are handsomely paid by the taxpayer (annually/pensions/superannuation/benefits) to do a good job, which is what they are paid for..

They are no different from Joe Blow down the road who gives his all to a business,trade or company.

And what's this I hear about the wealthy Jill Rann inheriting Neville's pension for life?
