Why Liberal is Called The Right & Labor Is Called The Left :D

I have often wondered why it is that Liberals are called the "right" and Labor is called the "left."

By chance I was sent this from a mate who read it in verses of the Bible:

"The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left".

Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV)

Also, Matthew 25:33 . . .

He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

So, sayeth the Lord. Amen.

Can't get any simpler than that!!! :^O:^O]:)

Think that says it all :^O They will be Gonski in September. They are so on the nose that people can't wait to Gonski them :^O They will live & die with the Gonski ]:)

they are both centrist parties. its a somewhat outmoded description, although the libs are lurching to the loony right more everyday. (bernardi etc etc)

The notion of right = good, left=bad derives from from the same superstitious mindset that approved the burning of witches. Left was seen as sinister (which is actually the Latin word for left)

When there were no racial or religious minorities to persecute lefties were a useful scapegoat. And superstitions prevail - even when we don't even realise that is what they are. I'm sure there are posters here who still remember (Mr Elephant certainly does) getting whacked across the knuckles with a ruler for daring to write with his left hand.

I sure remember getting whacked across the knuckles but the nuns who taught me went one better...they tied your left arm to your side, preventing you from using it at all.

They referred to us children as "cursed"...very christian of them...NOT.

Could explain why my handwriting is so terrible and always has been.

I think it's more of a play on words

ie 'left is right and right is left wrong'. That's the way I have always thought of it anyway ..:-x

another example ...

we were out driving one day and my bil knew the way to go - where to turn etc - I didn't (I was driving).

We were coming up to an intersection and I said "we turn left up here don't we?" the bil said 'right' so I turned right.... 😮

Me to, I had my left hand tied into the belt on my tunic and had to write with my right hand, I can still do things with my left hand without thinking but I was at an Anglican school so it was the same across the board.

The terms "left" and "right" appeared during the French Revolution 1789

If you know your history this is when the terms left & right was first used.

It changed over the years but still remains as a term for political party ideology in the Labor side of politics, factions which are sometimes called extreme left factions like the Greens & factional ideologues of the left like the communists.

The modern term Left denoted the Labor party & the term right denoted the Conservative party, this has always been the case.

There are muted variations of terms like centre left & centre right but these terms are still of the left & right side of politics.

More contempory labels are small L Liberal & centre left Labor. The factional bases of the Labor party are referred to as the left & the Centre Left & if there is a Centre Labor faction I haven't read or heard about it, it's a contradiction of terms.

well its obvious you have no real idea. moderate libs and labors centre right factions are almost indistinguishable from each other. thats why the far right conservatives believe turnbull and petro georgiou along with the likes of judith troeth belonged across the chamber.

although abbott has managed to squash that side of turnbull that was decent in recent times.

Well here we have the bitter LL trying to change history, trying to blame Abbott for the woes of the failed Labor party, trying to shift the failed Labor party to the centre to try to obfuscate that Gillard is a socialist politician & hard left. A pawn of the radical unions..

This is the reason she has failed so dramaatically in the eyes of the public, they don't like her or her politics, they don't trust her & they don't believe a word she utters, they no longer listen to her or any of her party.

Labor know this & they will be obliterated come Sept.

LL, why are you so insistent on telling people they are wrong or have no idea, please we are intelligent, educated and just as capable as you of making comments, the difference is most of us do not slam your thoughts as you do with your negative responses to most posts but in particular those written by seemingly liberal voting people ?

I don't understand your adverse criticisms, is it just to stir people along or are you just like that ?
