Spice Jars

Do you use special little spice jars, or just leave your dried herbs and spices in the jars you get them from at the store?

I have started to use labeled ziplock bags in timber draws, they are easier to find and take up a lot less space.

i have a shelf dedicated to herbs n spices only

jars packets tins, you name it

i'll refill a jar if ive bought a large packet (dunno if it works out cheaper

generally i'll just grab what i want at the supermarkets

Leave them in the jars they come in. You can keep check on the expiry date also, if they are left in their original jar.

In the old days, herbs & spices were in little boxes, so it was best to transfer them to another container/jar.

but does that get awkward when you're trying to use a few?

and like trying to get a bit out of easch one and not getting the bags dirty?

So far so good, I do a lot of indian and thai cooking so small containers are no good and large containers (I used to store in glass jars) but it would take me forever finding things, I have a timber cabinet in the kitchen with slim draws so I can line them up, I just use a teaspoon to get stuff out if I need to but generally I don't measure I just poor out what I need.

Crikey, in a ziplock you could just open one side a little and tip some out, no problem 🙂

I leave mine in the jars I buy them in - although the ones I use a lot of, I will buy in packets and refill the jar.

One thing I do differently though - I keep most of my herbs and spices in the freezer - I have an oldish fridge/freezer with the freezer at the top and the freezer door is perfect for storing all the little jars. I can fit lots of them in, see the labels easlly and best of all they keep forever.

I am in a frequent "i hate cooking" mood, usually lasts 1 - 2 months every now and again, so i don't care.

Ams, I just thought too - if your dried herbs pass their use by date - just heat them up in a dry fry pan to "wake up the flavours", we do this all the time, esp[eciallyu with Indian spices

I generally grow my own but I do love dried Basil. It tastes so much sweeter on a Pizza or in an egg dish.

Coriander I buy fresh because it overgrows every other herb and bolts too quickly.

Things like cinammon, peppercorns and paprika I buy the jars and leave them in the original container.

just started my iwn fresh herbv collection - only killed a parsley plant so far (and an aloe very one LOL) but as you say, some need dry herbs, anmd al;l thje little bopttl;es just kinda hide and yopu can never find them when you want them.

Aloe Vera! Don't worry about that. Stick it in a pot and put it outside. It is a succulent. It never needs looking after or watering. Just break a bit off when you have a cut or blister or burn.

I have a ten year old aloe vera plant outside under the balcony and it only gets moisture from the air. No other looking after is ever necessary.

My new kitchen came with a spice draw, all the bottles lay in there own space, very handy!

I don't buy herbs, I only use a few types and just grow them, take what I need when required. You could just do that.
