There's beem a lot of hijacked accounts reported up on the selling

boards, the last couple of months.

A specific announcement across all areas would certainly be helpful, particularly for those who may not even read the selling/buying or other boards - perhaps on their sign in page instead of the advertisements.

What happened?

Our company recently discovered a cyberattack that comprised a small number of employee log in credentials, allowing unauthorized access to eBay’s corporate network. As a result, a database containing encrypted password and other non-financial data was compromised. There is no evidence of the compromise affecting accounts for Paypal users, and no evidence of any unauthorized access to personal, financial or credit card information, which is stored separately in encrypted formats. The company is asking all eBay users to change their passwords

What customer information was accessed?

The attack resulted in unauthorized access to a database of eBay users that included:

·       Customer name

·       Encrypted password

·       Email address

·       Physical address

·       Phone number

·       Date of birth

When did eBay discover this issue?

The company discovered that unauthorized access to our corporate network had occurred earlier in May. We immediately began working with security experts and law enforcement to aggressively investigate the matter.

If my information has been compromised, what are the risks to me?

We have no evidence that any customer financial or credit information was involved. Likewise, the file did not contain social security, taxpayer identification or national identification information.

The information that has been accessed is often publically available. Thus, the primary risk is increased exposure to consumer scams.

Following a cyberattack of this nature, it is common that fraudsters will try to exploit well-known brand names like eBay in an effort to obtain personal information. They attempt this fraudulent activity through phishing emails, texts, phone calls and fake websites.

I don't know if this is a case of Ebay telling some porky pies or merely misreporting facts in this article, but it says the hacking happened in March & April, not happy Jan! 😞

Post 7 in this thread, is quoted from an announcement made by an eBay rep on our Selling & Buying boards.

You would think they would post that message on all our boards, especially this one. It isn't a pinned to the top thread either.

Just thought, maybe they haven't said anything because its only the US site affected? maybe they didn't hack the Australian ebay. I only found out about this after seeing a tv news headline about it, think i missed the story now because i came here to find out lol

i don't know but the article was from yesterday even though it refers back to March hacking, not sure if its 2 seperate issues.. Hopefully Ebay Australia will clarify this soon, no doubt they will be inundated with msgs asking them about it now its been on the tv news.

To interpret the "ebayspeak' for you........

The hack occurred in Late February. The hackers were then able to access/download your personal information through

Late Feb, through all of March, through all of April and also the first 2 weeks in May.

Ebay discovered the hack in early May, immediately plugged the hole and then 2 weeks later after analysing the data

breach it became obvious to ebay that they needed to go public due to privacy law breaches ..........

The horse had not bolted................... it was running around and around outside for months whereby anybody with the

knowledge could have taken it for a spin.

Why do you need an email to change it?

I just happened to have changed mine 3 days ago. They haven't really made any effort to notify the people on the US ebay either.

What were the hackers after? There haven't been any reported thefts. I wonder if they were after peoples passwords. Even if you change it here...are you using the same one on other accounts? (not an actual question)

If you are I'd change them too.
