Man wearing hats inside

The other night watching HotSeat, one of the contestants was wearing a hat. Said to my mum that there was a time when a man didn't wear a hat inside and she mentioned that it was the norm for a man to tilt his hat for a lady also.

How many other things from the past have long gone as well as shoes and bags not matching.

Way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth (lol)

and there really were no take away places, I remember

it was very rude to eat whilst walking or even on the street

for that matter.

There were signs moulded into the footpath in the city

that said 'no expectorating'. Never knew what that meant.

You still can't wear a hat in the RSL clubs here in Sydney.

I still think it's bad manners to wear a hat indoors, but then again I'm old school, so I would, wouldn't I ?

I don't really see the point in wearing a hat indoors though.

I have to laugh (inwardly) at some of our young girls at work wearing a beanie all day at their desks because it's a fashion statement. I don't laugh out loud, of course that would be bad manners.

Also you had to have your head covered when you walked into a church. Also never comb your hair in public.

Without really thinking about it, that's still something I never do. Maybe fruit or an ice cream, but not a sandwich or burger or anything like that. I'd have to sit somewhere to eat those.
Although that may be simply because I'm a bit messy and would probably end up wearing most of it lol

And I remember bieng told by the nuns who taught me that "only a murderer would wear gloves in church."

We used to get into terrible trouble at my convent school if we were seen eating or drinking in the street while in school uniform, and to see a nun eating ANYWHERE would have been considered so shocking as to be virtually unthinkable.

Also I'm not sure about here in Australia but in England it was considered disrespectful (almost contempt of court) by some judgesf or a woman to appearbefore them in a courtroom withe her head uncovered.

I'm with you there.

And the school my kids go to, they are taught the same, and if someone stops to talk to them (except for their school yard mates when "playing" in the playground iykwim), they have to remove their hats.

BC had a lot of trouble with this as he wore a hat until grade 7, includiong indoors - he pulled it down over his eyes so he didn't have to look at anyone and he could pretend they weren't l;ooking at him - until Grade 5 he sat under his desk to avoid the same - it took the school a lot of patience to get him to do the whole hat thing.

If the boys are wearing dress uniform with shorts, socks must be pulled up to knees etc

Had to wear gloves when I was at school, and one Anzac Day Parade, I had removed one of my gloves (was holding it) whilst on parade and a photo of us on parade ended up on the front page of the local paper - I was in the front row - no glove - and the Nuns went ballistic - how I had bought shame on the college etc etc - I was suspended and parents were asked to return from OS to collect me.

It was a similar scenario the following year when I got busted for selling condoms at school......

That didn't go down well either....

although I was expelled for that one, and dad reckoned he had to donate money to the building fund to get me back in.

At a golf club I used to belong to, if anyone wore a hat in the clubhouse they were supposed to shout the bar as punishment.

While I was active military I made the mistake of calling a younger woman ma'am. She flew off the handle and threw a tizzy fit. Where I come from you call all women Ma'am it's a sign of respect.

I don't like to see people wearing hats indoors especially baseball hats but my hubby has developed a problem lately in that his head is permanantly cold, he is very thin on top but not bald bald, he's taken to wearing a beanie inside sometimes, just yesterday I went and bought him a plain black one so he didn't look so silly in the black and white footy one he's been sporting. He's been waffling about wearing a beret, get real I said, he's no beret man.

My niece is married to a bloke who I swear never takes his baseball cap off, his kids wouldn't know what he looked like without it, they'd probably scream with fright if he took it off. lol.

When I was at TAFE a few years ago the teachers used to tell the young guys to take their caps off in the classroom. Which they did, but they couldn't see the need to.

" Also never comb your hair in public."

I got told off for doing that at primary school sports day!

The rule no eating on the street was observed also.

recently went to a wedding with a friend at a very proper church here. he came and got me,complimented on wearing a real dress and real shoes,but that isn't the funny part,lol!

we went to pick up his mom,and she was horrified that i didn't have a"church" hat,so she loaned me one of hers for the service! it took everything i had not to laugh hysterically,but she was SO serious,i dutifully wore the hat until she said i could take it offf at the reception. AFTER the bride and groom were presented.

stafford and i were giggling madly all the way home,lol!

Even on the hottest day, no one was allowed to sit at the dinner table without wearing a shirt/top with sleeves at Granma's house.

Personally, I detest baseball caps except on a baseball field. But I suppose they are better than a terry towelling number.

My balding ex, in winter, used to wear a cheesecutter cap outside only.

For the odd church occasion, a square scarf diagonally folded and tied under the chin was acceptable.

Yep - no indoor hats here. My kids know the rules.

The worse manners I see are on the train. I daily see people:

pick their nose

brush their hair

do their makeup

clip their nails

eat smelly food

talk loudly on mobiles

You still wouldn't sit at my dinner table without a shirt on. I'm okay with sleeveless though 🙂
