The 2014 Archibald Prize finalists have been announced, Tim Storrier's painting of Sir Les Patterson has won the Packing room prize, who's your pick for the big one? I can never choose just one.

I wish someone next year would do an iconic painting, that says something more realistic about our present Australian way of life....like a painting of a fly-in-fly-out worker say, after a haggard couple of weeks of twelve hour shifts in a stinking hot mine site - waiting outside the ramshackle Perth airport terminal for a lift home! Many folk would relate to this......

To be able to capture that weariness and the dazed eyes. And the "just let me get home to my bed" slumped-shoulders.

Great subject for a compassionate artist.

I'm not denigrating the miner in any way, but the subject of the Archibald is usually of someone of importance within the arts, medicine, politics, business, etc. world.

Maybe someone else can help us with an artist that has captured "real life" identities by way of a brush.

Oh God forbid then!......a painting of a weary FIFO miner/worker ....with say, the Minister for Mines loping around in the background then.....that would qualify ?

....problem would be finding any Minister prepared to go within a few feet of the Perth Domestic Airport and/or near a 'real' worker.

As always it's going to be an almost impossible task for the judges, but my preferences are (in no particular order):

Fuifui Moimoi by Nicolee Payne
Morpheus by Andrew Meizi
Proud by Jandamarra Cadd
Tom Uren by Mirra Whale
Adam Goodes by Alan Jones
Reg Richardson by M Cairns
Sarah Peirse by Jude Rae

It took me over 30 minutes just to come up with this short-list of seven, so I really don't envy the judges this year. Any of the above would be a worthy winner IMO and it's a pity that only one artist can win the ultimate prize. Just to be named as a finalist is a remarkable achievement in itself.

Had another look at the painting by Andrew Mezei, as his name seems to be a popular choice on here.

I love his explanation of the painting but when I look at it, there is something not quite right with her head/face?

Does anyone else get that feeling? and if so, I wonder if it's on purpose ?

The Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales (the Gallery) invite artists to submit paintings in competition for the Archibald Prize 2014.

The work

Must be a painting.

Must be a portrait painted from life, with the subject known to the artist, aware of the artist’s intention and having at least one live sitting with the artist.

'The prize will be awarded, in the terms of the will of the late JF Archibald dated 15 March 1916, to the best portrait ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia during the 12 months preceding the date fixed by the Trustees for sending in the pictures’.

The use of the word 'preferentially' does, however, give artists some latitude.

I recently heard on a news broadcast of other guidelines for this year, almost like a prompt that changes each year, but I can't find any referance to it online.

I've been looking but haven't found it yet, I am finding lots of other interesting stuff though.

Oh and my claim to fame is I went to art school with Archibald finalist (2007 & 2011) and winner of the 2009 Salon des Refusés People's Choice Award, Zhong Chen, we were in the same exhibiting group at the end of year. I remember he spoke very little english and was painting very large wonderful landscapes at the time and I was exhibting portraits 😄 the irony!

That 'morphing' is an art form in itself isn't it? Mesmerising is the perfect word for it - I have had to go back a few times for a second and third look ..... and will go back again!

So many familiar faces and winning portraits - like a trip down memory lane.

Some amazing talent very evident in those Young Archies .... I had never heard of them either but what a great idea.

Ahhhhh I have often wondered about your training as your subjects, colour and placement in the picture challenges have always appealed - if you have mentioned your training before I must have missed it. Would love to see some of your work with a brush
